Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I covered the basic concepts of limits and continuity of functions. He felt pretty comfortable with the material, and I asked him to continue to work on the next set of homework so he can be prepared for his midterm on Thursday."
"During this session, we covered implicit differentiation and related rates word problems in depth. The student understood implicit differentiation well, but needed help a bit with related rates. My advice to him would be to draw a representation of the word problem first and assign variables as necessary. Then, he should write out everything that he knows and everything that the problem gives him. I also suggested that he practice as many examples of related rates, as they can become increasingly complex as you progress through the material. These two topics are sizable and they may appear in the test, so it's best to master them through disciplined practice. All in all, I think that after the session we are one step closer to being well prepared for the test on Friday!"
"His calculus class has begun but he wanted to talk a little about Riemann sums. I showed him why they work and how they are used and we did a handful of problems. I mentioned that Riemann sums are not actually how we calculate integrals, and the importance of nailing derivatives, so that the rest of calculus becomes easy."
"I explained a variety of rules when taking derivatives, including power rule, product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. The student was struggling with the approach to all of them beforehand, but he is now coming to terms with them all. I left him with problems to work on for each rule, and we established a solid baseline for future sessions."
"I gave the student a preview of what will be in her Calculus BC course for next year. We reviewed the fundamentals of functions, trigonometry, transformations, logarithms, exponents, etc. I did an introduction to limits. I gave a brief overview of the derivative and integral as well. The goal of today was to give her a foundation so she isn't surprised when heading into next year. I was very pleased with how quickly she grasped onto limits in particular."
"I had her work through some chain rule practice that specifically had e, sin and cos. She had some problems with the first few, but then she got the hang of it and did well with the rest. We also discussed a few problems from previous quizzes that she was still confused about."
