Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session, the student had a lot of reading analysis. We went through and read aloud two major pieces and then reflected on the pieces; underlining, thinking through a thesis, and outlining. He then wrote his three paragraphs, and we went through it with corrections and finally, a final product!"
"I helped the student narrow down his ideas for an autobiographical poem for class. We discussed the effect of poetry vs prose, and we practiced distilling his complete sentences into image-based poetic expression."
"This session, the student and I worked through analyzing a short passage from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." We discussed the sonnet form and vocabulary which helps when discussing poetry (quatrains, iambic pentameter, rhyming couplets, etc.). We then looked for ways in which form mirrors content, discussing plosives and ways in which word sounds often indicate emotional meaning of a text. We then discussed how shared lines and shared rhymes additionally mirror Romeo and Juliet's shared thoughts in the passage. For this week, the student should review the terms and passage from "Romeo and Juliet." Next week, we will apply these concepts to one piece of contemporary poetry and one piece of contemporary prose, writing a short analysis which will become the basis for a longer essay on each. We will also discuss European history in more detail as this greatly interests the student. Great work!"
