Since we had not met for a couple weeks, we touched base on how she felt about her progress in class. She felt that the material was being covered faster than ideal. So, we made a plan to address key confusing topics in preparation for her test on Tuesday. We discussed polyatomic ions, how to name anions and cations, and the difference between the suffix "ite" and "ate". We also covered how to determine the number of atoms in a neutral ionic compound, including how it depends on ionic charges. Furthermore, we addressed partial negative and positive charges in a polar covalent bond, electronegativity differences, and VSEPR theory. I advised that in preparation for our Sunday session, she 1) make and study the common polyatomic ions with flashcards; 2) finish assigned worksheets; 3) read through handouts; and 4) note down any areas that include outstanding conceptual questions.

Today the student was prepping for his AP test. He also received his electrochem test back and he did excellent on the free response (97%) and okay on the multiple choice (75%). He definitely struggles more with the multiple choice on the AP practice tests as well. I have suggested for him to not get too frustrated with the MC, because some of the questions are more conceptual, and with more exposure to the questions he will be able to answer more questions correctly. He is an amazing student who already knows his passions and dreams and I wish him the best luck on pursuit of them!
