Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Federal Way, WA MCAT tutoring
We discussed carboxylic acids and their derivatives. We began by discussing their naming, and reviewing the redox reactions that could interconvert them with other oxygen-containing compounds. We discussed their physical properties, and their acidity and how that was influenced by the inductive effect. We discussed how to produce carbonyl compounds from alkenes via ozonolysis. We then moved on to carboxylic acid derivatives, their nomenclature and relative reactivity. We discussed the main reaction to interconvert them, nucleophilic acyl substitution.

We reviewed four Verbal Reasoning passages that I had previously assigned the student to read, as well as the rationale behind the answers. Our study will mostly be focused on fine-tuning his critical thinking and specific logic skills by repetition and engagement with challenging arts/humanities passages. I think he has a good intuition that he will learn to follow in terms of choosing the most correct answers. For Sunday, I will send him a few more passages to complete.

Tonight we started the second review for the student's upcoming test. We focused on some material that she has been struggling with since the midterm. We covered cytology and then endocrine concepts heavily because that is one weakness that I would like the student to turn into a strength. We walked through the symptoms of Cushing's and Addison's disease to help understand why the symptoms present themselves the way they do. We also went into detail on hypo- and hyperthyroidism and tried to logically explain the symptoms. I used examples to illustrate how the disorder has a systemic effect. The student and I will be meeting again in the morning to cover diseases by system.

During this session, we discussed common traps and how to avoid them. Then, we did an exercise in which the student read a passage, and went through each question, writing down why each answer choice was wrong (or right) based on the common traps. Then, he chose 2 out of 3 passages to complete from the prep material. We then discussed the answers in the context of common traps. This weekend, he will complete a practice section (or full-length MCAT), and review the verbal section in the context of common traps. He will also complete the 3rd passage from the test that we worked on today. We will go over it, and any questions he has from his practice section, on Tuesday. He is showing improvement, and he is very focused on learning these strategies. Great job!
