Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Federal Way, WA Latin tutoring
Today, the student had some new vocabulary words that she needed to learn for their upcoming exam. Her teacher had just introduced the words to her yesterday, so for the duration of today's session, I had her make flashcards for all the words. She only knew <5 words out of the ~40 on the list right off the bat, but this is understandable since she had just barely learned them yesterday. She was to able to slowly but surely commit some of these words to memory (both spelling and oral recall). She seems eager to learn and improve her Spanish skill level every session.

Today we covered topics in the exam: vocabulary from Unit 3 and stem changing verbs. We are going to meet again tomorrow to drill vocabulary and practice verbs with prepositions. She has a test on Friday. The student received a 94% on her last quiz. I left her with extra practice in the textbook (page 46).

We reviewed 3 sheets that were homework. The student got everything right. Then I asked her to do the vowel pronunciation song. She had a little trouble at first because she still thinks in English, but this is common for first time learners. She improved as the class progressed. Then I asked her to read new words that had vowels to show her how their sound never changes, even if the context does. To make it easy to understand, we divided the words in syllables. I also explained to her what a diphthong is. We reviewed the subject pronouns with hand motions and it was almost perfect. The concept was clear and by the end of the lesson she got them right. In fact, after practice, I gave her a pop quiz, and she got all the answers right. I introduced the question equivalent to Who? in Spanish, how it changes based on number. Then we talked about the two verbs to be used in Spanish and how they are not interchangeable. We introduced "ser" and talked about the cases in which it is used. Then I showed her the variations according to the subject pronouns. Her homework for next week is to review and keep practicing and I gave her a "ser" practice sheet to fill out. I was very impressed with her attentiveness, involvement, quick grasp of concepts and performance.

The student is fluent in Spanish, but she needed a brush up to get ready for her upcoming trip to Spain. We worked on the grammar structure that she needed to reinforce, and I indicated extra practice that she can do on her own.

We first reviewed materials from last week and moved on to a new lesson. We have learned more grammar such as, "want to, the most, I think, etc.," plus more vocabularies. We also studied about how to count many different types of object in Japanese. I will send more handouts to practice Hiragana and hope it helps to make some progress.

We reviewed verb conjugations, reading and writing Hiragana, conversations, and words. I asked the student to practice daily at least 10-15 minutes and seek out songs/anime/movies in Japanese to increase familiarity with the language!
