Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Federal Way, WA Geometry tutoring
The student and I reviewed concepts for her Geometry test tomorrow. We used her chapter tests and text book to work on problems she'd gotten wrong and to review definitions and make flashcards. We reviewed: triangle proportions and ratios, Pythagorean theorem, similar and congruent triangles, geometric proofs, and conditional statements. She was able to work through a lot of the problems herself but needed reassurance to build her confidence and some clarity on how, when, and why to use the different systems she's been learning. We worked through a number of practice problems and she said she felt much more confident and prepared. She also made flashcards on the different conditional statements to help her memorize them. Good luck on the text tomorrow!

The student's teacher is giving a re-test tomorrow of his previous test on similar polygons to the entire class. We reviewed the problems from the previous test that will be similar to problems on the exam tomorrow. Many of his mistakes were due to algebra mistakes. We practiced multiple similar algebraic problems and he did very well with them. The other difficult problems were with similar shapes inside each other. He did well when we practiced solving these problems by first separating the shapes. Finally, we spent time reviewing the relationships of lengths, areas, and volumes of similar polygons. He did well with these problems as well. He felt much better about the material after our session, especially with the algebra.

Today the student and I worked on preparing him for the geometry state assessment. He has retained a lot of the material which we covered in previous chapters so he did well in the practice exam we went over. The exam pulls heavily from a number of theorems in the chapters he has covered, so he was totally fresh on all of the material, but I believe with a little studying he will be fine.

We covered areas of irregular shapes (dividing up shapes into regular shapes and adding them together) and also geometric probability. We also reviewed picturing certain regions when given a complex shape and knowing which regions to subtract or add, particularly for concentric circles. She was pretty comfortable with everything. I emphasized the 30, 60, 90 triangle rule and told her that she would use it a lot when the problem involved equilateral triangles.
