Session Summaries by Accounting Tutors

Federal Way, WA Accounting tutoring
The student and I did not cover math this session since we had met the previous weekend to prepare for an exam he had the day before our session.  He thinks that he did well on the exam and felt that he was definitely better prepared for this most recently exam than he had felt for previous exams.   He and I went over some of his chemistry work.  He recently transferred out of honors chemistry into regular chemistry and immediately saw the different in material.  In his new chemistry class, they are reviewing the concept of a mole and molar mass.  He needed some hints when I asked him to explain relevant terms, but understood quickly.  After briefly going over the material, we went over his most recent lab, which he had questions about.  We walked through the lab together and discussed all the post-lab questions that were required to be submitted.

The student and I reviewed initial consonant blends today (Br, Bl, Sm, Sw).  Then she read a short story out loud that repeatedly uses the blend "Sp."  Goal was to familiarize her with this blend in context/stories.  Also, another goal was to coach her out loud reading helping her with volume control, clarity, pronunciation, etc.  Then I read the story out loud.  Goal here was modeling a clear out loud reading with loud, strong, accurate pronunciation.  We finished the session with review of the number line and ordering numbers least to greatest/greatest to least.  The student did great with the number line making (self) corrections when necessary.

The student and I covered Science because that was the section where he felt like he needed the most help.  We went through a number of charts and graphs and experiments passages, working on one together and then having  the student  work on one on his own.  I advised him to do an entire section one night of the week to get used to timing himself and how to use his new information and techniques at that speed.

The student and I worked on correcting sentence errors and improving paragraphs. We discussed subject verb agreement, verb tenses, and parallelism. I assigned a writing mechanics review assignment.  Then we worked on sentence completions and a short double-passage. We also discussed reading passage strategies and practiced some of them. For homework, I asked her to define a list of words she did not understand.

The student and I worked on past perfect tense tonight. We completed the list of verbs he knows in present tense and wrote their past tense form. Then I asked him to describe certain things in past tense. I also gave him present tense sentences and asked him to convert them to past tense sentences.
