Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed each section of the placement test, first talking about the strategies, tips, and facts we had discusses for a section, and then doing a small, timed portion of the section, grading it, and then discussing it. We went over the notes that I had left with them after each session we had had. We also talked about their routine for the night before and morning of the test. I think they're ready to rock the test!"
"We went over ACT English. I covered some common idioms and punctuation rules. Then, I went over subject-verb agreement and pronouns. Next, we took a practice test in ACT English."
"We went through a reading section timed. We then went through some English passages. She is going to focus on science and math by herself until our next session."
"Today, we started by covering the ACT English section. He has a strong grasp of grammar and a good eye for style; he's one of my stronger students in terms of this section. Finally, we jumped into the math section. I'm going to bring in some formula sheets so that he can begin to review those as well. He's smart and a quick learner."
"The student and I focused on the ACT today. We began by reviewing the ACT practice test that he had taken between our sessions. The student seems to be gaining much-deserved confidence in his test taking and logical reasoning abilities. We worked through the questions that the student had answered incorrectly and spent time discussing the essay prompt. We spent the remainder of our time attacking several English passages."
"Focused on the Math section of the ACT, reviewing geometric and algebraic problems, formulas, and the like. The student didn't know how to approach some types of problems, but seemed to understand when we reviewed the problems/methodology."
"First, we reviewed some topics that the student had questions on. He did well on the English section, improving five points over his original score and understanding immediately what he did wrong when we went over it."
"Today, the student and I concentrated on ACT Reading and the Essay. We walked through one fiction and one humanities reading section, both of which have confronted him with the most difficulty in the past. We made short notes on the main ideas of each paragraph, and then looked to "find the red flags" in each possible answer--a strategy which worked well for the student. Finally, we looked at a sample essay together, constructing a solid intro paragraph and topic sentences."
"We focused on English again today. After completing the full section, we talked more about prepositional phrases and sentence agreement."
"We went over a variety of practice problems from the science section of the ACT, tackling individual problems as well as discussing general strategies. The practice problems were scored and we went over incorrect answers. The biggest struggle was time, since the science section on the ACT is really fast paced. I recommended that the student take a few timed practice tests (at least the science section) to work on pacing."
"ACT practice test: math practice test - percents, proportions, geometry, algebra, algebraic expressions, graphing, Pythagorean theorem, circles, etc. Left the student with an English practice test."
"The student and I worked on English and reading today. She did a good job on both sections. The reading was more difficult for her, but she pushed through. We're going to continue working on timing for that section. Good job!"
