Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
" We walked through a few worksheets that he had to do and spoke about the different concepts that he had to know. We set up a schedule for him to start studying for the next few days and also spent some time discussing study habits. I think his grasp of the material is excellent. I told him he has to make sure he knows the material like the back of his hand."
"The student had an exam on Thursday, so we did a quick review of her exam material. We went over molecular genetics including PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, and sequencing. We continued by going over her lab report on transformation."
"Began chapter on evolution, looked at theories from different scientists ending in Darwin and natural selection. Most needed to work on memorizing differences between homologous and analogous structures and understanding how to read a speciation tree. Did practice problems from workbook."
"This session we did a final review before the student's test tomorrow. We did practice AP problems and discussed strategies for answering complex questions. The long technical problems are a challenge for him. I left him with additional problems to practice with an answer key."
"Today, I helped the student with his most recent lab that used SDS-PAGE to help delineate the protein characteristics of multiple fishes in hopes of generating a phylogenetic tree. We covered the basic steps of SDS-PAGE and answered the lab comprehension questions together. He has noted that since starting tutoring session, his AP Biology grade has now come up from a C to an A average."
"We covered the neurology chapters, which is the latest material he is working on. We focused on the specifics of how an action potential is carried along an axon. We discussed some strategies about how to learn all the vocabulary in the chapter. At the end of the session, we discussed the AP exam and the practice exam he had taken. I continue to encourage him to take more practice exams in preparation for the real exam."
"This was my first meeting with the student, so we talked briefly about where he is at in his class and what his goals of the tutoring sessions are. We established a planned schedule based on his learning style and wants. After that we worked on material for his class, covering axon physiology, action potentials, and neurotransmitters."
"We went over several free response questions today. I timed the student and then compared his answers with standards set by the AP website. We then went over how to correct his answers in order to accumulate the most points possible. We will continue to work on free response questions as well as genetics topics covered on the exam."
"We covered Mendelian genetics, chromosomal defects, genetic mutations and chromosomal DNA outside of the nucleus in preparation for a test. The student reported that she did well on her last exam. I left her with AP style multiple choice and free response questions to complete for next session."
"The student completed problems from a review packet that his teacher prepared. She gave them the packet on Monday and a week to complete it. After our session, I went home to create a small flash-card style review for his test."
"Tonight we started with a quick review of genetics and evolution and I went over DNA replication again which the student seemed to understand. He asked questions about things that were confusing him and I explained those questions to him. Next time we will do another quick review to make sure he has it down. We moved onto Cell Biology. He pointed out cell organelles and told me the functions of each organelle. Next I explained cellular respiration and the mitochondria which the student seemed to understand pretty well. We next discussed the cell membrane and molecular transport through the membrane. We moved on to basic biochemistry. Next session we will discuss plant biology and photosynthesis."
"We went over her AP Biology assignments, regarding positive/negative feedback systems, cell signaling, and cell pathways. I gave her the Free Response Test, of which we did question 8. She was successful due to the fact that I guided her to the answer and question 8 was about cell signaling. I left her with the packet with the instructions to do at least 1 question before our session next week. We will complete this packet before the AP test, along with a set of multiple choice questions. She seems like she should be prepared for the test, but for the other test, she needs more work because the answers require one to recall specific knowledge."
