Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had yet to cover the math or science section in any depth so we spent the first half of this session working on that. We went over the math section and I tried to offer more rapid methods to solve many of the problems as well as how to properly solve any he may have gotten wrong. We worked through a practice science section where I explained how to efficiently go through the material while rapidly making sense of the diverse styles of graphs you may encounter. We finished the session by working through some practice English passages. The student has improved, but there are still a few things that give him trouble from time to time, notably tenses and logical flow problems. We will cover the grammar rules a bit more next time. I told the student he should continue to read and try some timed sections of his choosing."
"During this session, the student and I took a look at the science section of the assessment. We talked about what to look for when reading the passages and some tips for how to answer different types of questions and break down what's being asked into something simpler. We went through the three intro passages in the prep book together along with the first passage of PT 4. For the following few passages, the student did them on her own after we talked about how the strategies we'd discussed will work in that passage. The student did very well using the strategies we'd discussed and her predicted score after this session was around a 23 or 24. She needs to improve how quickly she can read through the passages, because at the rate that she is currently going through them, she would run out of time as she hits the final one. However, we've seen a huge improvement from her base score of around 17 on the science section. She will complete three passages on her own as homework for our next session."
"Today the student and I graded her science homework. I gave her four passages to complete. She was able to answer every question within time constraints and only missed a few questions. Her main weakness seems to be reading. Out of the two passages I gave her for homework, she missed 5, making her composite for the section a 24, her lowest score to date. Instead of telling her about time constraints we spent the rest of the session reading passages together and annotating important sections. Afterwards, we went through the questions together so that she could get a feel for the appropriate thought process. I assigned her an additional section for homework without time constraint and told her to read over the answer explanations for the section we completed together. At the end of the session she seemed more at ease with the reading and I think with practice she will succeed in this section."
"Today the student and I worked through some problems from ACT book. He already completed most of the book so we jumped around and worked on problems that he hadn't already worked on."
"Today we reviewed math and science. The student is very good at the majority of math, but is more than happy to ask for help when she needs it. As for science, she is doing well, but needs a major confidence boost. She is very uncertain of her skills and I feel as though that is holding her back. For homework, I asked her to do a practice math test and a practice science test."
"Reviewed most recent independent Science practice. The student accomplished his assignment to consider every question, skipping those that were unclear at first. Scaled score of a 26, with significantly improved pacing. Did a bit more guided practice to create a checkpoint - we will return to Science again before test day. We began concept review of the Math section; he demonstrated excellent calculation ability and was very receptive to alternative explanations and solution strategies. Will proceed from algebra to geometry next session."
"The student and I worked on English and math today. We reviewed some of the fundamental concepts found on the test and practiced the timing necessary to complete all of the section questions. He did a great job!"
"Madison and I started the session with some Math practice, but we moved on to the Science section after about a hour. After discussing various general strategies for approaching the Science section, we spent some time getting familiar with and practicing reading the graphs, charts, and diagrams."
"We covered primarily ACT English practice in our session this week. We also did a short Science practice but a majority of the time focused in English since it's the subject that challenges the student the most. After a quick warm-up practice test, we spent a majority of the session reviewing and practicing punctuation usage. I noticed she seemed challenged with this during the other English practices we did and thought it would greatly benefit her to lock down punctuation usage. I am having her do 2 Practice Tests and one full (~40 questions) subject test in each section by next week which we will review. Overall a good session and I can see her starting to progress in English."
"For this session, the student and I focused on the science and math sections, ones that he said were challenging when he took the test. We did several practice passages and worked through them together. We began working through a math section, and I helped review and conceptual areas that he needed to refresh."
"The student had completed multiple English and reading sections from the test prep book prior to this session, so we spent the first half of the time going over these passages and any questions he had missed. He did very well on these, scoring 71/75 on the English (33 scaled score) and 37/40 on both the reading sections (32 scaled score). He had perfect scores on both the natural sciences passages, which is a good sign since he is usually a little pressed for time at the end of the section. For the last half of the session, we worked on the most difficult math problems."
"We did a timed reading and science section. The student's scored was raised 3 points on each section in comparison to when he last took the admissions test, which is good! We also continued to read his summer reading books."
