Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a set of questions related to cyclohexane/alkane conformations. I helped him solve those problems on his own by teaching him all the concepts he needs. He understands the concepts very well."
"Today, the student and I worked on elimination reactions (E1 vs E2), difference between SN1 and SN2 reactions, and factors affecting each of them. We also discussed the difference between substitution and elimination reactions and factors favoring either of them."
"During this session, the student and I concluded our discussion of alcohol reactions. I believe that she has a strong understanding of the mechanisms discussed and their importance when conducting a synthesis. I believe that continuing to review the concepts and working through practice problems will lead to much success, and I will aim to do this with her during our next session."
"We discussed synthesis of organoboranes and oxymercuration/demercuration reactions and their mechanisms. I explained why the partial positive charges formed where they did (stabilization of charge on more substituted carbon) and what that means in terms of the product formed. We then discussed the student's lab assignment of alcohol dehydration, and I helped him explain his results. We then reviewed reaction equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle, discussing why not heating a dehydration reaction long enough in a reaction in which the product involves water would result in an equilibrium shift, forming more reactant."
"Today the student continued working through her assigned homework problems. The topics included nomenclature of alkenes, alcohol dehydration to generate alkenes, and the IR/ NMR of different molecules."
"Today, the student and I had a quick session where we reviewed all of Chapter 9. She went through each ppt slide and explained them to me as if I were the student and she the teacher. Lastly, we worked on her last pre-lab assignment and answered all the questions."
