Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did very well on the English practice I assigned him, improving his score by three points. We went over his mistakes and he was able to easily see why and where he went wrong. We were able to get a lot of great practice in today with science, a subject he identifies as a major weak point. Going through the questions, I taught him the best way to approach different question types and where and how to find the relevant information. Pacing is definitely an issue for this subject and will be a major point of focus for the rest of our sessions. I asked him to do some science and math practice for next session."
"Focused on the writing section of the ACT, reviewing expectations for a good essay, essay organization and construction, and writing practice. We will review the student's essays next time. Meanwhile, he should practice and review the reading section for the next session."
"During this session, the student and I started by going over the practice test he took over the weekend. Although he only showed improvement in two subject areas, his composite increased by one point. We worked on the math section today, as it seemed a good opportunity to probe into why his math score didn't improve as we had expected, We used his answers from practice test 1 to review strategies that we had previously discussed and focus in on some of the ways that the ACT writers try to trick test takers, especially in the problems towards the end of the section."
"The student only finished 3 sections of her last practice ACT, but she boosted her scores up to 26s on English and Reading and a 28 on Science. After going over those sections, we did some more Math practice together, and she seemed to be more in the zone than usual. We wrapped up our time discussing some of her questions concerning majors and colleges."
"I reviewed the essay he wrote last week and gave feedback for him to incorporate in the future. I will assign another essay over the weekend and he should be sure to develop a plan and follow it to aid in organization of his essay. We also covered 3 reading sections and he has very good instincts. He will complete the 4th passage for Wednesday using the strategies we identified--mark the text, but don't read every word, look back at the very specific line referenced for each question. We then covered one science passage and discussed strategies for this section as well. I believe time to complete each passage will go down once we implement them."
"The student did two practice tests in science and reading since those were her weak topics so that we could figure out what areas we needed to work on. We will begin working through problems together at our next session."
"We worked on the math and reading sections of the ACT tonight. The student did great on the math portions -- slowing down just a little bit will help her avoid simple mistakes. She should also make sure she doesn't spend too long on difficult questions, and instead just moves on. The Prose section of reading went very well! We will keep working on this section of the test."
"Tonight, I worked with one student on the SAT. He worked through a multiple choice math section and a sentence improvement section. The other student is taking the ACT, so I worked with him on that. He worked through two reading passages and a science passage."
"Today we worked on the English section with practice questions, both working together and the student working through some questions on her own. She is really getting grammar rules down and is becoming more confident in this section."
"The student and I went over the practice test that she took last time. She did well on all the sections. I think the more practice tests, the better."
"We went through a practice science exam that the student had taken. We also went through a math practice exam she had taken. She does very well."
"The student and I spent the first half of the time doing and reviewing a science section of a practice exam while applying speed-increasing tips that I had shared with him. The last half of the session was spent doing math problems from the math section of the practice exam."
