Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First session with the student. Focus was on material covered in his first midterm for business calculus - plotting functions, limits, derivative as a limit of the difference quotient, and rules of differentiation (product, quotient, and chain rules). We went through problems from a variety of sources, confirming his calculations, discussing how to lay out problems and reinforcing his understanding of the limit concept. Finally we spent a few minutes discussing a few thoughts on study and classroom habits (although his existing habits are already very good). Over all, his command of the material is quite good, conceptually and in terms of performing calculations. Algebraically, he will benefit from practice factoring and applying the quadratic formula. Also, discussion on laying out more complicated problems will be helpful for him. I left him with practice exams and he has plenty of existing material to practice with before his test on Tuesday."
"Went over simple differential equations and integration. Clarified the difference between a general and particular solution."
"Reviewed approximation methods for integration. Specifically, the trapezoid rule, mid point rule, and Simpson's rule."
"We began our review of topics in calc 1 today, covering the limit definition of the derivative, critical points and how to evaluate maximums and minimums. We will go over when the derivative does not exist next week. We also covered the mean value theorem and Riemann sums. Next week we will get more into derivatives, covering the product, quotient and chain rules and start going over derivative applications."
"We did a quick review of the material covered in the last session (functions, domains, range, solving quadratic equations) and went into a review of trigonometry. In trigonometry, we just went over the basic functions (sin, cos, tan), special triangles, unit circles, and how to solve trigonometric equations. The biggest issue the student has are some gaps in his knowledge of algebra. With more review of algebra, I think he should be good to proceed more into calculus. As far as extra practice, he just needs to review more algebra concepts."
"The student worked on the summer review packet for Calc 2. She covered 16 problems spanning all of algebra, trig, and PreCalc. We also learned about function rules a way of numerically understanding functions in tabular form."
