The student and I focused on the commutative and associative properties with larger numbers. She was more comfortable explaining the process today. She also improved her flash facts, doing three more in five minutes than our at last meeting.

The student and I focused our time on addition and subtraction of integers. We started by talking about the number line and which direction you travel in for each operation and why. Once the understanding was deeper, we went back over the problems of his homework he got incorrect. The more we practiced the more fluent he became. I left extensive homework, including review of addition subtraction multiplication and division of decimals, as well as extra sheets. We also spent a great deal of time working on practice problems at the end of our session. He will have to complete at least 8 tasks by next session.

The student and I got to meet at our old place: the public library. It was completely refurbished and roomy. We got a room and worked on a mixture of skills from last school year, such as math facts, long division, and multiplying multiple-digit numbers. We also worked on graphing points and lines, and developing linear equations; percentages, fractions, and percent word problems; and we learned how to cross-multiply to solve ratio problems. He remembers these things and learned some difficult new stuff, so he will be ahead of the game in September.

The student and I had a great conversation about his first week of school. He likes his teacher. He says she is nice and funny. We covered counting money, adjectives, volume (liters and milliliters), contractions, division, locating places on a map, and reading comprehension (reality vs. fantasy).

The student and I had a great session last night. We worked for 30 minutes in her new math book and then spent the rest of the time doing reading. She completed a lot of addition and subtraction work in the book and seemed to really enjoy it. For reading, I brought a book from the public library that she had expressed interest in in our previous session. She read the first chapter to me, and I noticed that she seemed to be rushing and skipping over words that she did not know. After reminding her that she did not need to rush and that she was not being timed, she continued to speed through the chapter. This is definitely something that we will work on in our coming sessions, and I will probably stop her frequently to ask her questions about the text. Finally, she started to do some work in her writing book. All in all, we had a productive session and got a lot of work done.

The student and I had a really nice session today! She seemed particularly focused and willing to work - when I arrived she was even going over her new flashcards and was eager to talk about some of the neat new things she got for the school year. To start, we used her workbook to practice finding the mean, median, mode, and range of several sets of numbers. She recalled how to perform all of the formulas to find the solutions, so we mainly ran through practice problems. We spent the remainder of the session doing a few worksheets that I brought along, covering plotting coordinates and practicing multiplication and division. Overall, I was very pleased with her productivity today!
