Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked on math homework. Then we worked on comprehension. We really concentrated on how to find details and use a story map. He worked on in and out boxes with word problems. He also worked on multiplication. He is doing very well on everything."
"The student worked on her new chapter in Algebra 2 today, which was solving systems of linear equations. The method she learned today was to solve them graphically. We spent the last twenty minutes with her writing expressions for quadratic equations. New vocab: system of linear equations, solution set, intersection point, solve, classify, consistent dependent, consistent independent, and inconsistent."
"The student and I focused on the reading comprehension section of the ACT today. I think that he actually moved along fairly quickly and is doing surprisingly well. I am having him read the introductory sentences of each paragraph and some of the sentences in between so he has an idea regarding the subject matter of the passage and can locate the answers to questions within the text. I think that he has some difficulty applying grammar concepts to the exam, but he is making progress. Next time, I hope to cover the essay portion with him. Since the essay is more persuasive, I am fairly confident that he will succeed."
"The student and I discussed the format and timing of her exam. We also worked on some timed practice sections. She did excellent on the ability portion, answering them all correctly. The other sections she did well and missed about two per section. Next time we will review spelling and grammar to see how she does. We did not fully complete the Math portion but she said it was her weak area and that she wants to review fractions. We will focus on the Math and Estimation sections next, but also practice the Reading and Language parts."
"We went over IPC. We covered sig figs and conversions. We focused on converting from long form into scientific notation as well as converting from scientific notation to long format. The student was struggling when I got there. We were able to review all of his homework (3-4 worksheets) plus 2 pages in the book that were assigned. He had a much stronger grasp on it when we were finished. He still needs practice on scientific notation and conversion, and needs to memorize the conversion chart. "
"The student had completed more of the practice problems on the final review sheet on her own. I first checked over and addressed the incorrect problems with her. She commonly graphed (y, x) instead of (x, y), which I called to her attention and had her fix. We then worked through a number of problems together on topics such as interior angles of polygons, exterior angles of polygons, distance between points, graphing points, and midpoints. She showed me that she had gotten a previous quiz back that she got a 100 on. I was so excited to hear that."
"The student and I went over the Science section she'd completed in the previous session. We did another timed Science section. I advised her to practice timed science and reading sections on her own so she could be familiar with the timing. I also advised her to do math at a slightly slower pace on her own."
"The student and I reviewed his January SAT. We decided that he will review and study for the Writing section on his own, so we focused on Math and Critical Reading. For the Math sections, he needs to practice the difficult Geometry questions. He should also practice the most difficult questions in each section (i.e. the last 2-3). For Critical Reading, he needs to be careful to choose answer choices that can be supported by the text. Since he is bright, he sometimes logically answers the questions. However, it is very important for him to go back to the text to find evidence to support his answers. All correct answers are supported by the text!"
"Today the student completed most of her take home test for her biology class. The test included a number of topics that we have reviewed in past sessions, which includes conversions, significant figures, and unit measurements. She is doing well with concepts and theory."
"Today went well with the student. I mostly used this session is a diagnostic exercise. I found that he has a lot of excellent skills, but needs some direction on solving problems in different ways. Often he knows the concept, just needs to apply it in the appropriate manner. With some help and practice, he will get there. He is an able and willing learner."
"The student and I read the ending of his newest novel. We were able to glean ten new words from the descriptive passages. He also brought me up to speed on the story to this point. He did a good job on writing sentences to use the new words in terms of grammar and making a decision on what tense the verbs of the sentence would follow. As always, he is a good speller and has a good grasp of the deeper meaning of the story."
"We began our session discussing the student's availability for the fall and her classes. I will assist with writing papers for her history and psychology course. In addition: - completed phonics worksheets - completed several grammar worksheets - completed an exercise that referenced psychology terminology"
