Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I reviewed with the student the long vowel sounds. We then played some word games focusing on different suffixes and prefixes in words and on her spelling. I then had the student read chapter five of " The Dognapped Cat" and I showed the student how to follow the story and look for answers to questions regarding the plot. Finally we worked on phonics by playing a game in which the players move across a game board by pronouncing different phonemes and giving examples of words that contain them. I assigned the student some homework over the break. She is supposed to finish reading the book we are currently reading and do some worksheets on phonics."
"The student and his girlfriend: they are making good progress and are already getting better at recognizing math issues. I went through the rest of the math sections on practice test 3 and then went into some vocab. I planned on them taking a diagnostic on Saturday and having a grade ready for them for our next session on Sunday afternoon."
"- Factoring, Finding Roots, Rational Inequalities: Reworked exam problems that were missed; reviewed factoring techniques such as sums and differences of cubes; the student continues to show proficiency but must practice working carefully."
"The student and I finished our review of the math section of the ACT today. The student has excellent math skills. She is going to finish the math practice test that we worked on together before we meet next time. Then we'll just review the ones that she missed and then move on to a different section of the ACT."
"I spent about half of the time working with her on her essay about the biggest life lesson she has ever learned and the other half working through math problems. We also worked on finding resources for her science fair."
"Met the student and her father. Discussed what she wanted out of the tutoring, looked over her current grades, discussed teacher-communication things, and got about 30 minutes of solid practice in the textbook."
"The student wants to spend the time doing math. Math worked as a very positive incentive to focus him while we worked on phonics/the alphabet. Afterwards, we did some reading. He likes reading, and was very attentive during this time."
"I met earlier tonight with the student. We went over some Math problems and a Reading passage. I've asked her to complete a full ACT mock exam over the weekend so we can see where she currently stands."
"The student and I spent this session with critical reading strategies. She felt that these strategies would give her a systematic way to approach the passages. Overall, she seemed to grasp the strategies well, and she showed a strong ability to apply them in our practice passages."
"We worked our way through about 100 vocab words and did several math problems. He completed most of the worksheet that I gave him last week which was just the hardest problems. These kinds of problems don't really have strategies to complete them but instead you have to be kind of creative."
"During this session, the student and I worked on some sentence creation using vocabulary words with Latin roots. I compiled a list of tips and hints for her to use for making these original sentences with vocabulary words that are unfamiliar. We also worked on editing some of the essays found in her workbook, where she is to edit brief essays for grammatical and content mistakes. I assigned a few of these for homework. We will begin to work on writing next week!"
"The student and I began the session by organizing his back pack. We went through his classes and the expectations, and any upcoming assignments. Together, we came up with a plan on how to try and stay organized by making a list of goals and things he may need help with throughout the week in his planner. Lastly, we worked on the conclusion paragraph to his rough draft informational essay on JFK."
