Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed for her geometry quiz on area and circumference of a circle and arc lengths and sectors. She knew the material well. Then we reviewed for her biology test on plants and their evolution and life cycle."
"The student and I met and reviewed what she has to work on over the summer. I looked over several assignments for English and AP US History. We worked together to find key words and directional words in three essay questions on early American history. We also read through the first section of The Great Gatsby and discussed it. For our next meeting, we agreed that she will read chapters one and two of her history textbook and chapter one of Gatsby."
"We did some of the harder problems from all three sections on Practice Test 6. She is doing better in math but needs to work on SAT vocabulary. I've asked her to work solely on vocabulary until we meet again on Sunday."
"During this session, we began to prepare for the student's upcoming AP World History final. She had a review packet for the final that needed to be completed to help her study for the final and to summarize everything she learned over the semester. We managed to complete the first third of it, and review the information as we went along."
"Before our session today the student emailed me the prompt he selected along with a link to the short story it was associated with. Together we did a close reading of the text and he has started the process of building his outline, which is due Thursday. In his close reading he highlighted passages that related to the prompt and made notes about possible connections in the text. I think the student is really beginning to grasp the differences between "normal" writing and analyzing literature, which I think will be really important for him if he decides to continue on with other English classes."
"For the first portion of the student's tutoring sessions we will focus on the Math and English sections. There were 3-4 different types of errors that the student made on the English section of her diagnostic test, but once we went over them together, she readily pointed out and easily corrected herself on subsequent problems. I expect, then, that she will make fairly quick progress in improving her English scores."
"The student and I reviewed triangle constructions and theorems. We reviewed questions she got wrong from her last test. She has the basic concepts down, however, she should review how to construct a median, altitude, and perpendicular bisector. The student should review the relationship of an exterior angle of a triangle and the two remote interior angles of the same triangle as well."
"Today we started reviewing patterns, probability, and some of the statistical parts of the test such as mean, median, and mode. We also did some work on writing basics, such as punctuation and capitalization. He's doing fine with them in general, and should have no problem with those on his test."
"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall test-taking strategies."
"The boys practiced recognizing the author/illustrator of a book and were able to read several CVC words in the text -- sometimes they sounded them out and other times they could deduce the word from context clues/images."
"The students gave me ten words in Spanish each. Then we went in our textbook and went over the months and worked on the dates and the weather. I asked a load of questions in Spanish, and they're doing a great job at understanding and even answering a bit. We read a book they had on the water cycle in Spanish. At the end, we watched videos about Zombies vs. Plants in Spanish."
"After analyzing the student's last assessment exam, we spent most of our session today focusing on questions that he had struggled on. In particular, we focused on geometry and algebraic questions. He was doing well by the end of our session."
