My son has ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia AND a learning disability. He's always attended private schools for learning disabled children, but when we had to move, public school and an IEP were the only option. I called VT in desperation because he was failing across the board and was so distressed. I know he just needed the right environment in order to thrive. After a couple tearful sessions with the VERY PATIENT tutor, my son began to "get it". Once he did, there was no stopping him!

Pittsburgh Executive Functioning Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors understands how hard it can be to watch the student in your life struggle academically, so we take pride in our ability to connect people like you with knowledgeable Pittsburgh tutors for students who struggle with executive function in as little as 24 hours. Executive function is a broad term that covers several mental skills conducive to the learning process, including organization, flexible thinking, and working memory. If you feel like the student in your life could use a boost in one or more of these areas, please keep reading to discover more about the difference working with a Pittsburgh tutor for students who struggle with executive function can make.

What types of skills can my student develop under the tutelage of a Pittsburgh tutor near me for students who struggle with executive function?

Executive function encompasses a variety of practical skills that are important in a classroom setting, including concentration, self-control, understanding, and short-term memory. A professional Pittsburgh tutor for students who struggle with executive function can tackle each of these issues head-on to help your student make the most of the educational opportunities available to them.

For example, some students who struggle with executive function have a hard time remembering basic directions even if they were paying attention in class. A private instructor can activate more than one sense to make this information easier to remember and act upon. For instance, seeing something written and hearing it out loud provides students with more of a chance to internalize the information.

Similarly, students who struggle with executive function can be slow to accept new rules or points of view. Playing games under different rulesets can help students see the value of flexibility. A private instructor can also encourage creative thinking by encouraging students to think outside of the box. A simple game of "What's This?" can be all it takes to get a student to start thinking more creatively.

What are some of the benefits provided by Pittsburgh tutoring for students who struggle with executive function?

If your student's school has already assigned them an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan, their instructor can use that information to formulate a study plan that meets your student's needs. Spending one-on-one time with your student can also allow private Pittsburgh tutors for students who struggle with executive function to further refine their lesson plans, as they may be able to spot a problem that the school hasn't noticed yet.

Many students who struggle with executive function are also uncomfortable in the classroom environment because they associate it with falling behind. A private instructor provides a learning environment that doesn't have the same negative connotations, providing an opportunity for your student to build their academic skills without worrying about the past.

Since your student will be their instructor's only pupil, any questions they have can be answered before an underlying issue can spiral out of control. In fact, many students find it easier to ask a private instructor for assistance than a relative stranger. A private instructor can also provide prompt constructive criticism on your student's work, allowing them to review any mistakes while the thought processes that produced them are still fresh.

Pittsburgh tutors for students who struggle with executive function can also incorporate your student's preferred learning style into their study sessions to optimize their efficacy. For example, a kinesthetic learner can practice putting the right books in their bag, while a visual learner could benefit from a step-by-step chart highlighting what to do. There's no "right" way to study, so why not seek out creative solutions to help your student work toward their educational potential?

During our session, the student and I completed various practice problems from Chapter 3 to reinforce the material that was taught in class last week as well to help him prepare for an in-class quiz coming up on Wednesday. He and I discussed the concepts related to the Balance Sheet that are presented in Chapter 3 and completed several practice problems from the textbook. I encouraged the student to continue completing practice problems from the textbook to ensure that he is proficient in the material. With this continued practice, I think that the student will be successful in this course. We will meet again sometime next week.
