The student and I reviewed and covered a series of questions related to (and not limited to) the following topics: stock as a "call option" when debt exists; the comparison of the use of the free cash flow model vs. the dividend growth model for valuation (even for organizations that pay dividends) and the free cash flow preference; factors that affect bond yields; efficient market characteristics; interest rate and default risk, as well as the characteristics of junk bonds; and the evaluation of "value" using earnings per share and the rate of return.

We had an in-depth discussion of price ceilings and price floors. By the end of the session, the student seemed to be grasping it better. I gave her two interactive sites that allow you to interact with the price ceiling and floor graphs and give a clear explanation of the various types. It seems like we will be able to make good progress together in the future.

We went over work on the rest of the scenario analysis and the analysis of the sensitivity. The student learned how to implement data tables, form fan graphs, and how to form comparative NPV (and IRR ) schedules to clearly see which are more sensitive to the analysis. This allows the student to see which should be controlled or watched. Lastly, we took a brief look at a nonprofit that he works with and analyzed the balance sheet, income statement, and rates of expenditure for the nonprofit. He will obtain some more data on that so he can use the analysis in his work.

The student finished the remainder of his strategy homework. He went over financial forecasting methods and how those methods apply to the real world. The problem set consisted of a variety of difficulties and he managed to get through them all. There is going to be a lot of math and steps involved with financial forecasting, so staying organized will definitely help with figuring out how to solve the problems given to him. He does need to spend a little more time on the reading so when we are together we can make the most of our time.
