My son has ADHD, Anxiety, Dyslexia AND a learning disability. He's always attended private schools for learning disabled children, but when we had to move, public school and an IEP were the only option. I called VT in desperation because he was failing across the board and was so distressed. I know he just needed the right environment in order to thrive. After a couple tearful sessions with the VERY PATIENT tutor, my son began to "get it". Once he did, there was no stopping him!

Executive Functioning Tutoring review by Elnora in Albany, NY
The student and I had a productive session. She was concerned about the completion of one particular quiz (referring to her Leadership course) because her class was just provided access to course materials, etc. However, she was able to complete it successfully and it was a syllabus quiz that happened to have had a high point value. She also completed another syllabus quiz related to her Science course and by having two attempts, she was able to increase her grade. In general, we also reviewed the overall structure of the Leadership course and the expectations of the course. She also did an excellent job in posting a response and follow up response to another student within the discussion board area of the Leadership course. The question was related to the definition of leadership and she also provided an example of a leader. The post was well written and referenced the textbook adding support.

Executive Functioning Tutoring review by Lynne in Albany, NY
The student had some questions regarding test taking strategies and remembering data for tests. He is actually doing some great things on his own - not waiting until the last minute to study, practicing vocabulary for Humanities and Spanish each day, and using his planner. I gave him some ideas about using acronyms for memorizing techniques, underlining main ideas in a reading passage, putting vocabulary on his cell phone, intuitively going with your first answer, and not stressing. He is very determined to keep his grades up, and he admits that he has really improved his study habits from last year in middle school. He's a great student.

During this session I learned about the student (likes, dislikes, prior strategies, etc.). I provided him with strategies to begin implementing gradually. He agreed to implement the strategy of preparing his clothes, etc., the night before and to utilize his phone planner more. We spoke about the use of varied planners (large calendar in his room, phone planner, and pocket planner). He was pleased with this session and is looking forward to the next session.

Executive Functioning Tutoring review by Ryan in Albany, NY
After talking about our reading and working a little bit more on essay corrections from the weekend assignment, I wanted to try something different. The student and I worked together through an old AP World History test that we had not studied for. I helped him to think out the answers, using the information on the test and the information we do know to eliminate wrong answers.
