"Student and I did an overview of the whole test and then focused on the English subject test. We covered a lot of topics, such as making sure that sentences are complete, separating complete sentences appropriately, using the correct verb/noun pair, using the correct possessive form, etc. She has some English and math homework for the next couple of days. She did a very good job!"
"We reviewed her PSAT and the basics of standardized tests. We also did a more in-depth geometry review with practice problems. Homework is to review the PSAT thoroughly."
"Today, we went over the student's math homework, which was a section from a practice SAT test. His accuracy was fairly low. There are some large holes in his math background, and he also needs to work on his logic and intuition. Fortunately, he is responding well to my tutoring style and seems enthusiastic about our studies. His biggest problem is getting intimidating problems started. If it looks confusing or complicated, he will assume it is too hard for him even if it isn't. In response to this, I'm really pushing strategies because I always want him to have ideas for how to get started on a problem, even if he doesn't know how he's going to solve it at first. For example, when he sees triangles, he knows he's going to be using the area formula, the Pythagorean theorem, or some combination of the two. In addition, he also now knows to look for similar triangles and is getting more familiar with how one can rearrange geometric shapes in order to work with them more easily. Despite his difficulties, he is maintaining a very positive attitude, and if we can keep up the energy and the pace, I think he'll be ready in time."
