"Last week I assigned the student to watch a telenovela in Spanish and I gave her a short story to read. Today we spent our session discussing what she understood from the telenovela and chatting about her impressions of the show. Next we talked about the short story. The Spanish was pretty advanced and it used a lot of colloquial speech so she had had a hard time understanding it so we went through the story sentence by sentence and talked out the parts she didn't understand. We got through half of it so she will re-read the story for next week and we'll go over the rest together then. Additionally homework is watching two more episodes of La Reina del Sur, and an episode of a Spanish show that Connie knows and wants to incorporate into our lessons. She is also going to find three newspaper articles or TV news stories in Spanish on topics that she's interested in a write a short summary of each for next week. She clearly has a strong foundation in Spanish but has gotten rusty after not using it for so long. I saw a big improvement in the ease with which she spoke between today's lesson and last week's assessment so just doing the reading that I assigned and watching the telenovela helped to get her ear back in tune with Spanish."
"We continued working with Ser and Estar. I introduced the concept of telling time in Spanish using Ser and left him with practice to write more ser and estar sentences as well as time sentences."
"We went over math, Spanish vocab, and history. The student has the most trouble with history, but math and Spanish seem to be picking up."
