"I worked with the student on a practice test that she had taken. We went over the English and Math portions of the test, including a discussion of timing and how to approach each section of the test."
"The student and I met again today. We continued with our work on the ACT Math section. We used the same method as we did before - she works on a certain set of questions and I time her. We began at the end of one test, and she took longer than she usually does. As we started a new test, we noticed that often the ACT, consciously or unconsciously, breaks up the math section into thirds. The first third is easier and takes less time to complete, the second takes about the usual time, and the third takes more than the usual time. By allocating the extra time from the first section to the last section, she should be able to complete the Math section in time. When we started a new test, she was taking about half the time she needed to take per question, which is a great sign. I think by making her aware of this portioning of time, she will have more confidence and be able to rid herself of some of those test-taking jitters. We also talked a bit about using more equations to cut down on time. I showed her that a problem she was struggling with originally could be easily and quickly solved by writing out some algebraic equations. I look forward to our next meeting."
"Today we planned the rest of our meetings, discussed the student's areas of weakness, and started to discuss different test-taking strategies. We will spend most of our meetings working on English, reading, and writing."
