The student and I spent the first forty-five minutes of our session going over grammar exercises (such as a section testing his knowledge of differences between "their", "they're" and "there".) Afterwards she wrote a final draft essay on a prompt that he and I came up with together.

The student wrote the first draft of his essay on Holes, which I proofread for him. We then discussed the first two chapters of his new book, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles." This is a great book for him since at this point I have assessed that his strengths are writing long, detailed paragraphs with good analysis. "Hound of the Baskervilles" has quite difficult language so we're focusing on identifying meaning via context clues, summarizing what we've read (which helps with reading comprehension and memory,) and then utilizing new vocabulary words in our writing to show that we understand what they mean.

The student's mother asked us to again focus on personal narrative writing so the student began writing about horseback riding and a ride she had been on recently with some friends. She got really into it and we spent about an hour of the session on writing. We went over it afterward and it was much better organized, I felt. We worked on word problems afterward.

As always, we started by discussing the student's last week. He told me that he was doing well in his subjects. His new alarm also seems to be working well, which means that he has been reviewing and studying at home, which is an improvement. His current schooling seems to have turned around for the best. His parents would like me to move to helping him prep for a standardized test. We have been working through the practice questions, that his mother printed out for him. Our main focus is to help him learn the various things that writing questions are assessing, and to help with reading comprehension. I feel that he is improving in his ability to find the meaning of samples of writing, but we will continue working on this. I have asked his parents to obtain a prep book for the standardized test, so that we have material to work with. I also asked for him to produce a writing sample, so that we could go over his current writing skills.

During this session we focused on an editorial analysis assignment. The student's using MLA format on his writing assignments. He is motivated, and puts in a great deal of effort towards his assignments. He has received his first quarter grades and he's achieving mostly A's and a couple B's in his classes. It would be great to see his B in English raised to an A in the second quarter. We'll work towards this goal during future sessions.
