How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Over the years, school has become less of a standard during the summer. The tradition of summers off began in the mid-1800s, with the option for summer school occurring later. Nowadays, students are used to summer breaks from school. Research, however, has shown that your child may lose some of the learning that took place during the previous school year. The skills loss can build up to a two-three year learning deficit over time, and six weeks may be needed in the fall just to re-learn forgotten material from the previous year. To prevent this, researchers have concluded that two-three hours of study weekly are needed, which can be achieved through personal tutoring. It does not have to be grinding either. Varsity Tutors can match your child with a summer tutor in Everett, WA, who is passionate about their work and can instill that passion in your child through a truly enjoyable learning experience.

Summer learning loss most often involves subjects such as math. Addition, subtraction, algebra, geometry, and other math topics are easily forgotten. A tutor can also help strengthen vocabulary and reading comprehension. Does your child have weaknesses that can be built up prior to the school year? We can locate a summer tutor in Everett who can complement your student's learning style and create customized lessons that target their greatest areas of confusion.

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Everett, WA Summer tutoring
We spent the session organizing her study guides and planning out a tentative study schedule based on the subjects in which she felt most confident. Because she needed supplemental materials for History (which she is most concerned about), we spent out session reviewing for English. The student used an online study guide to review vocabulary and we talked through some of the major themes of Animal Farm. We will meet again tomorrow to do specific history studying. She was very focused and seemed eager to study and get through the material.

The student and I met to discuss his strategies for final exam preparation. After seeing the exam schedule and hearing what is expected with each exam we were able to develop a study schedule similar to that used for his midterm exams. The nature of his exams does give the impression these may be easier than the midterm, and he did well on those. After he shared the various test formats and reviews provided by the teachers we created the plan. As with midterms, he will study in relatively shorter chunks of time, alternate subjects, and insert small breaks. He stated this really helped to hold his interest and keep his focus at midterms.

The student and I had a really constructive session on Friday. The growth he has made since we first began sessions together is both evident and remarkable. I feel that he will have a strong performance during his finals next week if he continues to work on the study strategies we discussed. I look forward to our next meeting next week to see how he performed.

We reviewed previous chapters and analyzed chapters five through seven. She was required to tell me what chapters they were from and what they meant. We discussed how her instructor might format the exam based on how she did on the previous one. I asked that she finish reading the remaining four pages of chapter seven and finish the novel. She will read chapter eight and nine to complete it. We will meet again on Tuesday to discuss final thoughts and questions before her exam on Wednesday.

We did some intense scheduling today, planning exactly when the students should work on which assignments. Student A has to read and write chapter analyses of "Lord of the Flies," which he'll do over the next week or so. I also encouraged him to ask his history teacher about upcoming due dates, and to ask his English teacher for an exemplary analytical paragraph, since she told Student A his paragraphs were too short and contained too much summary rather than "analysis," but he is not sure what kind of analysis is expected. Student B needs to work on "Lord of the Flies" chapter analyses for the remaining 6 chapters, and his group presentation and comparative paper on that book and the work of Jessie Weston; he also has a fish paper due Monday. I encouraged him to send me his English draft (of the comparative paper) on Friday by email.
