Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Everett, WA SSAT tutoring
The student did not have homework, so we worked on SAT preparation in vocabulary and reading. The middle level is difficult, so I tested him on the lower level. He has a much better understand of this level than the middle. I left him with a number of word analogies of the middle level to review.

For each session, I started by introducing myself and asking about how they felt about the upcoming school year and the SSAT. I walked through the different test components with them and told them each to pick 2 of the 4. We covered these in more depth, and next time we will run a timed test for them. Then on the 3rd session, we'll run a test for the remaining half, and we'll have a pretty good idea of how both students are doing.

Yesterday was a productive assessment. The student is very sharp and very capable. I think the major thing we can focus on is test taking techniques to improve her speed and proficiency. This means a lot of drills and of lot of practice to maximize her results but once she feels comfortable I think she will do just fine. I left her with vocabulary and math practice.

We reviewed vocabulary from the last five lessons, and the student did a stellar job. He has obviously been studying and has gained real understanding of both the meanings of the words and how they are used in context. I had him take a reading comprehension practice from an upper level test to see how he might fare, and he did amazingly well. He also employed all the test-taking strategies very well and I left him with some homework - review the next vocabulary practice and a review of some math concepts and we agreed to tackle some more advanced math concepts on the next Sunday.

Reviewed the student's math diagnostic. She picked up formula translation rather quickly. We continued working on building vocab and focused only on words she didn't know. She is retaining the words she encountered before.

For this particular session, the student and I went over the vocabulary homework which I gave him after the completion of our last session. We began the session by using flashcards to go over the terminology. I provided him with a few minutes of extra study time with the vocabulary. While he studied, I graded his homework, where I was especially looking for the sentences he used for each word and for each part of speech relating to the words, in order to see if he really understood how the vocabulary is used. Afterward, we worked on three different reading passage examples from a full SSAT Middle Level test. For the first two sections, he had an unlimited amount of time to answer the questions. We then went over the answers, and I provided him with some tips, relating to identifying key words in the questions provided, in order for him to be able to find such words in the passages and thereby increase his chances of answering the questions within the allotted time provided for the reading portion of the SSAT. The third passage was timed and consisted of six questions, so he had six minutes to answer them. He was able to answer four out of the six questions correctly, and within the time given. When he answered everything correctly for other passages, it would be because he was not timed. So we will continue to work on practicing the search of key terms in questions, so that he may answer everything correctly and within the time given. Once that was over and his homework was fully graded, I gave him back the homework, where I explained corrections that needed to be looked at, all while providing him with a brand new vocabulary list, which we will go over when I see him again. Our next session will focus on this vocabulary, as well as a lot of pre-algebraic problems, as this was his last level of mathematics. It will essentially be a short refresher course to see what needs to be worked on, if anything, before going into some intense algebra 1.
