As your student develops their skills, they must understand skills like decoding and word recognition, as well as reading both accurately and quickly. Finally, to truly excel at reading comprehension your child must learn things such as synonyms and antonyms, affixes and roots, and word origins.

For many students, becoming a good reader can be challenging. However, the importance of being a good reader cannot be overstated. According to research on the effects of reading, having advanced reading skills influences the development of important general thinking skills. For example, good readers are able to think strategically, an important skill that transfers to all areas of learning. Varsity Tutors' skilled educational directors are happy to help students in Everett connect with an experienced reading tutor. A personalized reading tutor can provide numerous benefits to your student's reading development. Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Everett, WA Reading tutoring
In today's session, the student read 4 books he picked out. He did very well reading all of the books, though didn't know what several of the words meant. We reviewed the vocabulary that was unfamiliar to him as we read. I would explain what the word meant, and when possible, would give an example or show him an example (ex. words included "wink," "stretched," "sportsmanship," "team captain," etc. For two of the stories, I asked questions during and after reading to check for comprehension.

We read his weekly story and discussed the genre of folk tales where cultures create explanations for things that happen in nature. I used the review/comprehension questions to help guide and clarify his reading. Then we worked on his homework and discussed the slight differences between words like shimmering, brilliant, and gleaming. Also discussed generalizations (always, never, usually) and identifying them within text.

Today we worked on time management skills, and the student started to set up sample schedule for breaking down English and History assignments into daily work. We are working toward looking at her work on Sundays in preparation for the week, assigning them to a day and time slot, and sticking to her allotted time, with breaks for her own activities in between. We are working to break the current habit of putting off doing the work then cramming. She grasps this concept easily and is willing to making changes. Her homework for me for next week is to organize her History notebook and use her daily schedule, tweaking it as she needs to best serve her. We spent a 30 minutes reading History and 15 reading her novel assignments and testing comprehension. She reads well and has a good vocabulary. I encouraged her to read aloud for now and read daily in both subjects.

Today we worked on combining two and three letters together to form parts of words. We also focused a lot on silent e and the student is doing really well with remembering that not all e's sounds like a long e, especially when it comes at the end of a word. She is excellent at remembering what we've discussed from the day prior. I've noticed that she doesn't like to take risks with reading. For example, she is often reluctant to try sounding out new words because she is unsure whether she will succeed or not. I try to give her positive reinforcement, hints when she is stuck, and encourage her to at least give it a try but she often says, "I don't know." I definitely see her making progress and it is great that she is eager to begin her sessions right when I arrive.
