How can Phonics tutoring help you succeed?

Phonics is an essential topic for your child to learn, not just to try to do well with with their current course or pass a Smarter Balanced or End-of-Course exam, but to try to succeed in much more beyond their current grade. It involves recognizing the phonemes, or sounds, that make up individual words. Knowing each letter, letter groupings, and their individual sounds might enable your student to learn how to decode efficiently while reading. For example, this is how one sounds out syllables. Even when broken down to the basic parts of language, phonics comes easier to some students than others. Your child may be a little slower to learn. Fortunately, the educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help connect your child with an independent tutor in Everett, WA, who can assist them in understanding phonics.

A tutor can go over all the relevant topics, and identify your child's strengths and weaknesses. All lessons are completely targeted towards whatever confuses them the most. To find a teacher who can cater to your child's learning style and needs, contact our educational directors in Everett today to find phonics tutors to try to help your student address all of their problem areas.

Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Everett, WA Phonics tutoring
During out session, the student and I worked on an outline for his essay final the following day. He was given a prompt asking him to explain why villains are important, and what makes a good villain. The answer was to be written as a 4-5 paragraph essay that included examples from one of the books in the class. He chose "Big Brother" from the book "1984." We created an outline for the essay, and found quotes to support his arguments. He then began writing a practice essay so he could rewrite the outline more clearly.

I am very proud of the student for his hard work as his grade has gone from a C to an A in English. I am happy to see that our sessions combined with his dedication have allowed for such progress. We began the session with a timed AP prompt, formatted specifically to the AP test. We then went through his paper together and discussed his strengths and areas in which he can continue to improve. He is reading To Kill A Mockingbird in class, so we discussed the themes of the book as far as he has read. I also asked specific questions on each chapter. I then gave him another short essay prompt specific to the themes of the novel.

The student and I worked through three manifestos for a class discussion on Wednesday. Each of the manifestos was very dense, so we worked through each manifesto line-by-line which seemed to help her comprehension. We itemized the main points and important takeaways from each manifesto at the end of our session. By the end of our session, she had notes on each manifesto and seemed prepared to discuss them in class.

We read through chapter 3 of A Tale of Two Cities and discussed the significance of certain words and sentences highlighted by the student's teacher. After doing a close reading of the chapter, and explaining much of the content to the student, I helped her write a Tone Statement for the chapter.

The student went over practice multiple choice questions, focusing on using context clues and key words in the questions and possible responses to differentiate between good and best fit answers. I asked that he go over a book in order to have a couple books at hand to feel confident to discuss in the free response essay. When we did the practice essays the week before, he did not feel confident to write about any of the books listed to use. He says he will pick a book and go over its themes. I told him in our next session I would ask him about the book and write a practice intro on it.
