Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Everett, WA Organic Chemistry tutoring
We started the session assessing how the student felt during the week as they covered the discussed material and he said he felt better with his understanding of the material and that he had taken a quiz and thought he did great. We then had a an overview of the material covered in the previous session related to the digestive system and metabolism, followed by a discussion of the hormones involved in the regulation of digestion. After he felt confident on the grasp of the material, we then did an intro to the nervous system: types of neural cells, their cellular arrangements and their functions.

The student has one final exam on Friday on the nervous endocrine systems. Last time we covered the nervous system, and for this session, we focused on hormones and the endocrine system. We discussed what the term endocrine means, that hormones act through receptors, feedback loops, and why they are important for regulation. We then did a quick review of the nervous system, and used that review to talk about the neuroendocrine organs. The student struggled with the concept of feedback loops, but we made sure to give examples and to cover it in enough detail that he understood how they worked and their purpose. I helped him generate a list of different things that he needed to review for his test.

The student and I continued to cover topics he feels least comfortable with in preparation for his final exam. Today we covered DNA replication, transcription, and translation. These are very dense subjects, but I felt that we should cover them all in one session so he can understand the nuances between each as well as the similarities.

This was our best session yet. We completed the study guide in its entirety (the final exam one). We went over the largest groups of insects, namely the beetles, bees, ants, wasps, flies, and "true" bugs. We also reviewed the morphology of their mouthparts, their feeding habits, mating rituals, and different stages of development in detail. I am confident if the student reviews this study guide many times that he will be prepared for his final examination.
