Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Since this was the student's first session, we started by talking about his priorities and what he perceives to be his biggest strengths and challenges with respect to the SAT. He asked that we focus entirely on the Critical Reading section. With that in mind, we went through a couple of sample passages. We discussed the advantages of reading the questions before the passage and experimented with a few different ways to chunk the longer passages into more manageable portions and to make it easier for him to correlate specific portions of the passage with particular questions. One of the major patterns that emerged as we worked was his tendency to choose answers based on his personal opinions, background knowledge and assumptions as opposed to what the text states or suggests, so we talked through some questions that he can ask himself in order to catch when he's bringing his personal assumptions to bear on a question."
"To assess the student's strengths and weaknesses, we reviewed her past scores and score breakdowns, and decided to first focus on math as the section that could most benefit from intensive preparation. First, we began reviewing general test-taking strategies and information from the book, and moved on to math-specific strategies and information. She has a good grasp of how the test is structured and what to expect generally, and seems to quickly integrate the strategies that are most helpful to her and her way of thinking."
"The student completed 3 practice tests. I also critiqued one of her essays and discussed ways to improve the it."
