Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked on AP calculus, with priority given to material for test the next day; computing volumes of solids, critical and inflection points, and multivariable optimization problems. Next session will include review of trigonometry and other calculus skills."
"We worked on Chapter 9 square roots, irrational and rational number, and the Pythagorean theorem. The student did very well with all of these struggled just a bit on the explaining problems but, as we worked through it, she understood the material.
Then, we spent a little time going over her makeup test on perimeter, area, and volume of different shapes. She also did well on this and understands it. Just needs to make sure she reads the question carefully so she knows what information she's looking for."

"Saw the student's writing score. His practice PSAT was broken down by types of questions he got wrong. We spent this hour working only on Identifying Sentence Errors, both tactics and practice questions."
"I went over ionic bond with the student, and then we moved on to the concept of covalent bond. I helped him understand Lewis configuration for covalent bond. We skimmed through his quiz for school to make sure we have the difficult topics covered, and we did a few online examples."
"Worked on adding ten and telling time. The student remembered our last session with the popcorn game. This time we drew pictures on the numbers. She needs to use hands on manipulatives to subtract with any numbers in the tens place. The student did an excellent job telling time. I even gave her 10:37 to do. She completed this without any problems. At the end of the session, we played an addition and subtraction game with cards."
"The student and I reviewed for his test on sampling distributions, confidence intervals for one population means, and the introduction to hypothesis testing. We talked about how increasing a sample size increases the precision with which we can approximate the population mean (Law of Large Numbers). We practiced comparing x bar of various sample sizes to the population mean, and discussed when you can use a sample to approximate the mean (with restrictions when n<15, when the sample is (approximately) normally distributed when 1530). We also discussed when you use z and t tests, and practiced finding a z score based on a certain sample mean and standard deviation (either of the sample or the population)."
"The student had a test the next day on fungi, protists, and bacteria. He seemed to understand all concepts, but needed to study more to solidify the knowledge. I think he is more than capable of acing the exam with the proper preparation."
"Reviewed Math with guided practice in sample section, then administered posttest. Student finished with 15+ minutes to spare, and scored a projected 32 for the section. He also immediately recognized most errors upon checking, so we discussed how to take advantage of the fact that time is not much of an obstacle for him on Math. Further Math review will probably be limited to drilling immediately preACT. Very, very encouraging performance so far. Next session will look at how to achieve a maximum score on the Writing section."
"The student had a quiz the following day on similar triangles. We began by going through any questions that she had on content that had been on homework or done in class. She expressed that she was having a hard time with proofs and did not feel comfortable doing them. We went over the theorems that were relevant for this section. We then did numerous examples of proofs. I began by basically walking her through the first few proofs. By the time we had finished all the proof exercises in that section of her book, she was able to do them without help from me and was showing confidence in her ability to solve these types of questions on the quiz."
"Math was the only topic we hadn't touched yet, so we worked through the remainder of a test he hadn't finished. He isn't making any silly mistakes, and got the first 40 or so correct. We also clarified some rules for exponents, series, and unit circles before closing out with a Reading passage."
"Reviewed energy and work problems: kinetic energy, potential energy, elastic potential energy, the relationships between different types of mechanical energy, calculating work, affects of friction on energy."
"We worked on the future tense of verbs. I didn't see any scores or grades but he is a very quick learner and does very well. I left him with some work to do in his text book."
