The student has entered a section of the course dealing with kinetics, which is arguably the toughest area except for equilibrium. We discussed situations where a single molecule simply disintegrates, for example H2O2, and how the half life is always fixed because the molecule either will or will not choose to fall apart at a given set of conditions. We also briefly discussed collision theory and the fact that the stoichiometry of a reaction gives no information about its kinetics. We worked several problems in his text dealing with experimental reaction rates. His class had an experiment with decolorization of a chemical (probably MB) by bleach. The reaction was probably virtually done by the time they began spectrophotometric measurements, so they got a stable rate = k rather than rate = k times concentration of A. We discussed how to do this experiment so that the rapid decline in rate from the initial value can be captured.

Discussed/reviewed gas laws. Dalton's partial pressure, Boyle, Gay-Lussac's combined gas law, etc. Related real world examples of pressure/temperature relationships, as well as volume/pressure relationships. Did sample practice problems using these formulas. Discussed STP, and kelvins, and how to convert from centigrade to kelvin. He is still waiting on two test results from the teacher, but based upon his own experience with the test, he feels confident he did well.

We covered the scientific method, and Newton's second and third laws, by performing labs using materials found around the student's home. He most needed advice on how to complete labs required for the classroom without the tools provided by his teacher at school. He needed work on understanding the definitions and applications of mass and force. He seemed engaged in the labs once we got started. I focused on teaching core concepts. The win for this session was that I helped him catch up in understanding to his classmates, by showing him ways that his labs could translate to his home environment.
