Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

Last night was a very similar session to the previous night in terms of material covered and student strengths/weaknesses. I usually use Level 16 or 18 reading level materials with the student, but next week, I will raise the bar a bit and bring more 20s and 22s. I discussed this with the student's mother, and we both hope the more advanced level will help raise the student's DRA2 scores at school. During our session, I introduced a new strategy, and the student comprehended it and implemented it well. She got stuck on the word "whined." So I wrote on a piece of paper the words nine, mine, fine, and line. She read them easily, so I said, "Now that you know that -ine makes the ine sound, see if you can figure out what "w-h-i-n-e-d" spells." And she did. Fortunately, the materials used last night afforded other opportunities to use this strategy with other words, so she now has four decoding strategies at her disposal, and I'll keep pointing her in the direction of one or another until they become second nature for her.

I began my fifth session with the student by helping her review part of her reading homework. Then we moved to having her read from a new list of sight words that I created based on the words she often misses. She did well reading this list. The major part of the session was spent with reading exercises that measured the number of words per minute she read. She had two passages to read. She read each passage a total of 4 times, improving her WPM with each re-read.

I met with the student for her math tutoring session. I began with coin and paper note identification and worth. We went over a word problem that I invented. Using money identification and worth, we went and purchased a teddy bear vase, a flower and 5 bags of glass rocks. She drew the paper notes of $1.00 each for the $3.00 teddy bear vase and the 5 bags of glass rocks, and then she drew 4 quarters for the flower. She then added the cost of the items together. I asked her how much she spent on her purchase and she answered $9.00, which was correct. We continued counting and identifying different U.S. coins, then using this information to answer word problems. She did well.

Today the student and I tried some new ideas. We listened to Todd and Frog are Friends on CD. I thought this would help him follow along with the words and he heard them read to him. We only listened to the first chapter, Spring. I told him to listen to as many chapters as he wanted until I came on Friday. We then played the rhyming Bingo game again. He likes the rhyming game the best. He is able to say the two rhyming words that go with the picture and main word. I then read a hockey game to him. We then did his sight words and he knew all but two. He was able to say all the sight words from the book Pete the Cat plays Baseball. On Friday, I told him I will read him another book and he will read me the comic book that I left with him today.

The book that the student brought to read today had large type and lots of pictures but was longer than some of the others and not as repetitive in the vocabulary. The story kept her attention, and she worked at figuring out words rather than guessing at the words. I only had to help with words that were irregular or difficult to sound out. After we finished that book, I asked about the book that I had given her to read with her mother. We talked a little bit about the story, which her answers showed that she had enjoyed. We ended our session by playing with the word chunks, matching a group of beginnings, all consonant blends, and endings with the letter i to make words. It was supposed to be a timed exercise, but the student insisted on keeping the clock, so I believe the time frame was extended so she would have maximum success. She had fun and learned some new vocabulary in the process.

I went through the final round with the student's essay that she's been working on for a few weeks. I reviewed the final draft and gave her notes toward tightening it. It should be good for her application deadline.
