"Today we covered reading comprehension and writing answers to open-ended essay questions based on a passage. The student does a good job answering multiple choice questions based on the passage, but still struggles with the open-ended questions. The main issues are understanding exactly what the question is asking and then organizing his thoughts into a coherent response. For the last couple of sessions we have reviewed how to make an outline to organize his ideas for open-ended questions, and this has helped, but we will continue to practice outline-making to help facilitate more thorough answers from the student. Going forward our focus will be on making sure he fully comprehends each open-ended essay question and devises smart, quick outlines to plan his answers."
"The student worked on completing a "Main Idea & Supporting Details" exercise. He also completed a "My Greatest Goal" Essay which continued from a brainstorming session we did last week. We also did a little reading and an exercise on commands and exclamations."
"The student wrote a story called The Camping Trip and wrote for 27 solid minutes--he was quite absorbed in the story. The elements he included: Where the character is going; what the character is doing; what the character brings; what the character wears; and who the character was with. He is really imaginative and thoughtful! He paused during his writing to talk about how he just learned about the thesaurus, and that he wished he had one so that he could find a better word than "my" when describing "my neighbors." He said the word "my" made it sound like ownership, which isn't right. We had a great conversation about that, and about the use of the possessive pronoun."
