Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"To engage the student's interest in writing creatively, we worked with elements of fiction and storytelling: character thoughts/feelings/motivation and motivation. The student wrote a few paragraphs of a story called "The Ant Exterminator." During the writing process, he asked really great questions such as "Is this in 1st or 3rd person? Can it go back and forth between both? Can I write in 3rd person and use quotation marks to show what Jack is thinking?" The student has great imagination and creativity. His dialogue was quirky and effective, including using a New England dialect. He's funny :)"
"Today the student read the fictional reading passage "Stray Cat Hero". The concepts covered were reading and comprehending fictional texts, and elements of cause and effect. He was able to determine the central message and convey how it is conveyed through key details in the text. We also worked on producing compound sentences and decoding words with common prefixes."
"Today, the student and I worked on two main writing activities. First, we reviewed the parts of a basic paragraph which he was comfortable with. Then, we used this template to unscramble 4 different types of paragraphs, identifying which sentences were the topic, conclusion, support, etc. With practice, by the 4th paragraph, he was able to order the paragraph correctly on the first try. In the second half the session, he wrote a fictional story about a day in the life of Busy the Beetle. Although there wasn't time to develop a long story, I'd like to work with him on creating a story with an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion."
