Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I met with the student and we went over his homework as well as any questions he may have had with his upcoming placement exam. We primarily went over systems of equations for his homework and exponents for the placement exam. For the most part, he's understanding the material once I describe the concepts to him."
"The student prepped for his final. We did the problems suggested by his prof in the Chap7 review exam and test. We used the slope formula, pointslope form, and various intercepts. He is getting very good at writing equations."
"The student got her test grade, and she did well. This evening, we worked on simplifying algebraic expressions with exponents, and finding the products and quotients of algebraic equations with exponents."
"The student had two online assignments to do, both about square roots. The first had to do with negative square roots involving the imaginary number i, and the second was completing the square. Afterwards, I helped him start on a review packet for Spanish."
"Worked on writing equations of parallel and perpendicular lines of given lines. Discussed and practiced using the slope of a linear equation to determine the slope of a parallel and perpendicular (same slope or slope that is a negative reciprocal). Continued using various forms of linear equations and practiced converting them to the appropriate forms necessary to solve. The student has a fall semester algebra test coming up."
"Worked through the student's review exam. The material is from Chapter 3 in his text on polynomials. The review covered writing functions for parabolas in standard and vertex form, finding the equation of a parabola given the vertex and a point, higher power polynomials, long division, synthetic division, quadratic equations and sketching polynomials."
"In today's session with the student, we covered graphical translations and transformations on his online homework quiz. He did very well with the material, and has shown great improvement in his spatial perception skills. For extra practice, I told him to finish making his formula study sheet that we started together, as well as to attempt relevant problems from his older math textbook."
"Our session centered around a Unit 3 Retest packet provided by the student's Algebra teacher. We covered point/slope, perpendicular and parallel lines, basic linear transformations, and solving/graphing linear equations. The student needed clarification on some fundamentals, such as the pointslope formula, solving linear equations, and how to distinguish perpendicular and parallel lines. However, with that said, this was the strongest session to date. He was very present and astute throughout this algebraheavy session. He seemed very confident in his abilities and I hope this translates into a high grade on tomorrow's retest."
"We covered fractions with monomials today. She did very well with her homework. She must work on applying a minus sign to the whole term when moving things across the equal sign. She has a quiz this week."
"Today we talked about polynomial functions and how to factor and simplify them. We worked with simple factoring, group factoring, and divisional simplification. The student showed great work ethic and a sound, logical approach to these problems. This should serve him well on his exams."
"Today we worked on Chapter 7 which focused mostly on linear equations. We talked about slopeintercept form, point slope form, and how to use each of these to graph the equation of a line. The student did well putting standard form equations into slopeintercept form. We also worked on two variable word problems she did well coming up with the expressions for these. We also talked about x and y intercepts: how to find them, and then how to use them to graph a linear function."
"The student and I went through problems involving radicals and imaginary numbers. We also went through quadratic equations and FOILing. He is able to work quickly and shows that he is able to replicate what he has seen very well. After one session, he seems like a very bright kid."
