We revised a previously written essay to create a final draft for submission to the professor. I gave a brief lecture on how to write introductions and conclusions as well as overall paragraph structure. We also brainstormed, outlined, and put together a rough draft of the student's next essay using the freewriting technique. Since her professor gave her good feedback on her last draft, she expressed that she is feeling much better and more confident about the writing process.

We worked on building a paragraph and identifying parts of sentences. The student did three short worksheets on finding the main idea of a story and identifying three details of each story. We went over an activity where he looked at a picture and wrote a short story about what was happening in the picture. We discussed planning out what the main idea of his story will be and what kinds of details are important. We then talked more in-depth about descriptive language and what makes a good beginning sentence for a paragraph. He then rewrote his story with a new beginning sentence and more details. We discussed ways to get his creative thoughts out of his head and onto paper so that the person reading it can see what he sees. He is very enthusiastic about making up stories. We will continue to work on building paragraphs and writing a contiguous story.

After speaking with the student's teacher, we were able to plan for the best use of my time. Today we worked on writing and practicing a speech to be given in class. After rehearsing, we began working on a reading comprehension activity. She read a short article to me and then with me. Next, we had to summarize each paragraph orally. Finally, we summarized in writing by creating four bullet points. She worked hard and her attitude was very positive.

Since today's session was our first, it served primarily as an introductory hour on the student's reading style, struggles, and ease with regard to fluency in particular. We started reading through some of his weekly reading assignments so that I could listen and watch him read. First, he read through a short story about a drama club fundraiser. This took us around 15 minutes, as I continually stopped him to clarify and discuss difficult words he encountered. We did the same with the second book. Afterwards, he wrote a brief response to a reading comprehension question for the first one. In this way, I was able to gauge his overall reading level and experience directly the concerns his mother had expressed about fluency. For the next session, we will continue to read through some of his assignments, as well as begin with some activities that will help with fluency.
