Essay Editing Tutoring review by Susan in San Marcos, TX
Student 1 used our time together to finish the pilgrim poem started last session. We made some adjustments after reading the rubric. I finished editing Student 2's essay. He had some really good examples. His structure is strong. He then did some more with the assessment exam reading comprehension released test. We went over the wrong answers. I gave him mini lessons on irony, figurative language, and context clues. Then, he worked on some of the released assessment exam writing test, which we will go over when we meet next.

Today, we focused primarily on English and vocabulary for the student's upcoming exam. Her questions are becoming more challenging, and she is reasoning through the problems. We did stop to discuss "not" questions on the exam and a self monitoring strategy if more than one answer choice may make sense-- she will go back to the question to look for the "not" component. We have one more session, and she is feeling confident. She led most of the session, and I had her utilize think-alouds to further narrow any problem areas.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Nikita in San Marcos, TX
In this session, the student wrote an argumentative essay for her English 102 class. The professor required a 6 paragraph essay, with the 5th paragraph focusing on the "counterpoints" - a style of writing she had never done before. She brainstormed topic ideas and came up with a topic sentence, thesis, and list of counterpoints. We went over how to defend the counterpoints and how to write a persuasive argument. Finally, we went over the concept of "call to action" and how to implement that into a conclusion paragraph. Her English has drastically improved, and she is starting to expand her vocabulary and use new words that she had not previously used in past essays.

We spent this session working on reading strategies and annotations. We worked on ensuring that the student takes steps to read actively. He will be better suited to address his writing prompts more comprehensively if he includes more specifics in his writing and if he can better draw from the text generally. The second half of the session was spent working on practicing integrating textual evidence into his sentences to add more cogency to his writing.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Lorna in San Marcos, TX
The student and I worked on a variety of subjects, since she is taking a pretty heavy load this semester. After going through the material for a Philosophy 110 quiz for the week, we looked at her linguistics assignments and planned out how to approach them. The majority of the time was spent going over one of the essays that she needs to submit for her application to the Film and Television program. It was a 500 word essay about any scene from a movie or show, explaining why it was powerful to the viewer through analysis of lighting, acting, costumes, etc. We still need to polish the essay before it is submitted.
