Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Vincent in Huntington, NY
The main focus of today's lesson was preparing the student for her vocabulary test. The student built a list of about twenty vocabulary words to study at home before the test on Monday. During our online review, she had a tendency to hastily choose wrong answers without thinking about the words, so a verbal review is recommended. She also completed a homophones worksheet. This was a difficult assignment for her, but we will focus more on this concept after the next vocabulary test.

The student needs to finish "Roll of Thunder..." (Chapter 10, 11, & 12). We started with some handwriting practice on the special whiteboard I brought with me again. I gave the student 3 and 2.5 minute time limits to practice writing both accurately *and* quickly. We will keep practicing and getting faster. Then, the student and I reviewed the five event picture and text plot sequence summary of Chapter 9 of "Roll of Thunder..." as a model to make one for Chapter 10 (and eventually Ch 11 & 12) with the pictures and worksheets I brought. I read the longer text chapter summary, and then told the student which pictures and texts to use. Finally, we watched the relevant portions of the movie version.

In yesterday's session, the student and I continued to work on Esperanza Rising. He had read another two full chapters since our last session, so I asked him to briefly summarize the chapters for me. After that, we discussed why some of the events he mentioned were so important to the protagonist's development. He seems to have a fairly good grasp of those issues, and though he's not always adept at expressing why certain events are significant, he's usually on the right track. Next, we finished reading a chapter that he had been working on and discussed the events that happened in the chapter. There were a few concepts in the chapter that he needed some further explanation on, such as a strike and how a strike could affect the workers at the camps. While he has been working on summarizing the chapters, he has been extremely thorough in his treatment of each scene. In this session, I tried to get him to minimize what he wanted to write down by identifying one key event from each scene of the chapter. This will help him develop the note-taking skills he will need in his future studies, and it will help him learn to use less information to prompt recall of the information he needs. Finally, one last thing I noticed in our session was that he was reading with greater speed and accuracy.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Alexander in Huntington, NY
The student did a great job today. He did all his homework as I asked, reading and reporting on what he read. We read together from his homework books as a review. His reading pace is still quite slow; he stumbles over longer words and certain letter combinations. Because of that, I have given him several sound combinations to practice until Tuesday, as well as more reading homework and reports. He still has a great attitude.

He completed the last reading in his assessment packet. He only missed one out of 42 questions. I worked with him on the vocabulary words for his test on Friday. Some of them he knew, others I showed him pictures of so that he could establish a connection with the words. We reviewed some of the math concepts that he should be familiar with, such as working with decimals and fractions, identifying prime and composite numbers, and identifying even and odd numbers. He is supposed to be redoing missing math homework in class on Friday.

I met with the student to practice areas of grammar. She used an online program, her own inference cards, and her workbook to focus on using commas, colons, semicolons, and the proper noun usage in a sentence.
