Essay Editing Tutoring review by Leslie-Anne in Carmel, IN
Since the student has been having trouble with reading and writing in her AP World History course, we practiced reading and writing. I had her read a short news article. Then we picked out important elements. Then I had her write a short summary. Then I had her write a short paragraph answering a question while taking a position on the article. We will continue this type of exercise in the future. I also tried to look at the type of assignments and feedback she is getting. We went over an assignment she had gotten back from her teacher. The student is going to try to get more assignments back so we can review them.

The student wanted to prepare for his next grammar test. I came prepared to address the topics on the test. We discussed the concepts (direct object, indirect object, object complements, subject complements, compound predicate and compound subject). Once I felt that he understood the concepts in theory, I gave him practice exercises to try out the new information. I also gave him an overview shorthand sheet that explains the main concepts. I gave him many resources that include detailed explanation of the topics on the test as well as practice questions.

He worked on an essay which was assigned by his language arts teacher for the week. We discussed the various requirements of the essay and created graphic organizers to help with the compare and contrast focus of the essay. He was able to complete a first draft of one of the paragraphs and he seemed pretty comfortable with knowing where to go from there.

The student and I began reviewing the writing process today. I gave him a handout with all five steps, and we focused specifically on prewriting. We reviewed prewriting concepts, such as gathering information from various sources, using an organizational tool, and making a plan. I gave him five different handouts (based on his kinesthetic and read/ write learning preferences) that could be used as prewriting organizational tools. He picked an outline format to use for the evening, and we tackled two different essay topics. For each topic, he brainstormed, created a thesis statement, organized his three main ideas, provided at least three sources of support for each of his ideas, and drew logical conclusions. He told me he had not yet been exposed to prewriting, but he picked up the concepts very quickly. We were able to get through two essay topics this week and his reflection, so he was assigned a first draft of at least one essay for homework. He struggled to come up with his first thesis statement, but most people find that to be one of the most challenging parts of writing, so I wasn't too worried. His confidence seemed a little low as we started prewriting the first essay, but as we moved through the body paragraphs, and he became more familiar with the process, he seemed to lighten up and had some really great ideas. By the second essay, his prewriting was spot on. He was thinking outside the box and didn't feel the need to run all of his ideas by me before putting them on paper. He had a great attitude as he worked through the material and he even told me he was going to try and complete drafts of both essays for next week (I only required one, because of the workload in his other courses). He's an ambitious student, and I can tell that he wants to soak up as much of this information as possible. He asks a lot of questions (which I love) and makes sure he has a good understanding of the material before we move on. I made sure that the student understood today's lesson as something he should be doing before he begins to write any essay and that really seemed to resonate with him. I also provided him with another handout on how to write a great essay. I explained to him that since he will be drafting an essay as homework, he should go through the steps in the handout when he begins to write. He turned in the free write I had him work on for homework and I told him I would review it and have it back to him by next week. I did have the opportunity to read the first few sentences though and I noticed that spelling seems to be the biggest concern. From now on, I will circle the words he misspells and require him to look them up in his dictionary, so that he gets used to spell checking his work. Other than that, I thought his enthusiasm was great and I'm excited to see how his first draft(s) turn out.

The student had an essay for us to work on and some Latin to review for her test on Monday. We worked on the basic editing of her essay and then the first and second declension of Latin nouns and translating English sentences into Latin. Monday we will continue on to the more in-depth editing of her essay.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Abigail in Carmel, IN
Today the student worked on combining the before, during, and after strategies we have been discussing, on longer passages with several questions. He was able to describe all of the strategies to me before we started, showing me he has internalized them well so far. We did one long passage together, and he did a good job taking the time to understand and process the meaning and answer questions. He also did a long passage on his own, and although he said it was difficult, he got 5/6 questions correct. Over the next few sessions, we will continue practicing with these longer passages, as well as working on other language arts question types.
