Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Amy in Canton, OH
Today was the student's last session. We spent the entire time working on her independent reading book for school. We finished reading it, so we ended up reading it twice over the summer. This time, we worked on looking at more specifics such as character traits and symbolism of the book. We read some history on the war that was going on at the time, to get a better idea of the time period of this book and the conditions of the time. We worked on gaining a better understanding of the characters and how they are related to each other and why they are important to the story. She did GREAT and it was an absolute pleasure working with her this summer!

We spent some of the time getting to know each other and talking about what the student likes and doesn't like at school, what colleges and majors she's looking at, what some possible college application essays might look like. Then we focused on getting familiar with the SAT and ACT and the differences between the two tests. She is obviously a very conscientious and hard working student. She has some test anxiety that I'm hoping to alleviate with further familiarity with both tests and practice essays. For homework, she is to complete one practice SAT essay from her practice book.

The student worked on drafting the essay for his summer assignment. He had chosen a prompt, but not done much thinking about it prior to me coming over - no outline. The session today was spent drafting. The first paragraph of his essay is looking good. I've advised his dad to make sure he has the essay completely drafted by our next session on Sunday so that we can spend the time editing/ finalizing.

At the request of his teacher the student worked on a revision of an essay that he had handed her at around the time we started working together based on a passage by the US writer Friedman. We read his essay and the teacher's comments then re-read the passage by Friedman. We worked on a new introduction and then started on the process of identifying (for analysis) the rhetorical devices used in the article. We shall resume in our next session.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Audrey in Canton, OH
We started the season with 4th grade sight words. We began reading a story "My What Is Showing." I introduced the following study skills and strategies: highlighting unknown words, context clues, decoding skills and comprehension, and flashcards for new words. New vocabulary words include: epidermis, dictionary, hesitated, and contractions. We talked about third person voice and author's purpose. He was very attentive and cooperative. Next visit we need to work on fluency, story elements, and comprehension. The student will revisit the story and vocabulary words on the following session. He is responsible for learning his new vocabulary words before his next session.

We began our session reviewing the student's summer writing assignment grade. He did a great job. He then shared with me one of his first essays for his Language class. In our revisions we focused on smooth transitions but overall an excellent piece. We spent part of our session reviewing his course syllabus and talking about his teacher's expectations for his writing course. Next we shifted our focus to his college essays. Many of the schools to which he is applying are utilizing the common app. We focused on devising a writing timeline to ensure that he does not miss any deadlines for his applications and has time for revisions or additions as he moves through the semester. He planned his first essay for common app. We discussed his thought process and filled in gaps as he focused on which topic is best. He will have this essay completed by our next session.
