Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We practiced basic 4 function operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing). The student needs more practice on division. We reviewed fraction addition/subtraction and mixed number fractions, exponents, negative exponents, and scientific notation."
"We reviewed concepts of place value, using Singapore Math, Everything You Need To Know About Math Homework, and test prep. We also learned a new Math tip for fractions and wrote examples of it in the student's notes. She demonstrated excellent understanding of place value, both by drawing a diagram and finding place value in test prep. The student is building on her understanding of fractions. For reading, we reviewed vocabulary and introduced several root words. We also practiced rephrasing questions and reading content. The student is improving in her reading comprehension."
"We reviewed dividing fractions. Factoring needs to be practiced using factor trees. The student is struggling with cancelling factors in fractions due to lack of practice. The student always offered an answer. I assigned extra practice on a website already utilized by the student."
"We reviewed every section of chapter 3. We practiced using the problems in the book. I told him to think about what the question wants you to do, then figure out the steps required. We also introduced the ruler. Inches are divided into 16 pieces. We represented them with a fraction. 5/16 inch would be 5 ticks into the ruler. We used a whole number before the fraction if necessary. For centimeters, we use decimals."
"We reviewed factoring trinomials with non-one leading coefficients with a good amount of success. We also covered other factoring techniques, including perfect squares. The student seemed confident in everything we covered. I left him with a method of practicing factoring trinomials."
"We reviewed her math packet in preparation for starting seventh grade tomorrow. The majority of the subject matter was decimal math - addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Once we did a few warm-up problems, we did word problems and problem solving using decimals. She did very well. The majority of her difficulties come from lack of organization. I recommended that she invest in graph paper to keep her digits in line and her homework for the week is to practice these organizational skills while developing tricks of her own to share with me next week."
