Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this evening's session, student and I primarily worked in the area of math. Specifically, we reviewed, discussed, and as needed, student self-corrected practice math tasks related to identifying the equation of a line. In preparation for work with areas of deficits in math, he completed a pre-assessment that covered 8th grade data analysis, numbers and operations, and algebra. Study and organization skills and tonight's homework in the area of Science was also addressed."
"The student has some homework problems in math that she wanted to review. They covered how to factor quadratic equations when the leading coefficient was not 1. She had done some of the problem already and from the ones that we went through, she had no difficulty with this information. We also reviewed for spelling test. The student has an 8th grade thesis to write and she decided to write on 90s grunge music. She had collected two sources of information to read, but had not yet started to read them. We went through the project details and discussed some of the things she should do while reading to make the paper easier to write (like record major ideas or quotes on note cards). Since she had not read any of the information yet, she was unable to write her thesis statement (she wasn't sure what part of the music she wanted to write about yet). The thesis statement/paragraph is due next week and she planned on reading the material over the weekend."
"We worked on the student's math homework, which was mostly dealing with equations in which "x" is on both sides and must be solved. He struggled a lot with the basic functions like combining fractions and distributing, as well as a little trouble with PEMDAS. I slowed him down and got him to take the problems one step at a time and that helped, but in general I think he needs a lot more practice with these."
"The student and I studied for his environmental science test, which is tomorrow. He was prepared with specific terms and concepts that he wanted to review, such as the greenhouse effect, thermal expansion, and comparing acidity of two objects. We were able to cover his questions and he was able to explain each of the concepts back to me."
"I helped prepare the student for his language arts test. We went over all of the concepts on the review and made sure he was familiar with each of them. We also went through all of the flashcards he made based on his reading passages and vocabulary terms, and I quizzed him on those and helped him with the ones he didn't remember. We talked briefly about preparing him to possibly take a Spanish class this summer. He seems to be doing well with all of the math concepts I have given him, so I'm going to see if we can figure out what he is struggling with to help him pass that test next week."
"Today the student practiced typing easy words from the home row, top row, and bottom row. He started learning and practicing using the shift key to type capital letters. Once he masters the shift key and capital letters, we'll reintroduce speed as a goal."
