How can a Writing tutor help you?

Writing is one of the most valuable skills your child could obtain during their academic career. Writing is primarily taught in English or language arts courses, but it is utilized in every class. It is also on every standardized test and is needed to apply to jobs and college. There really is no escaping writing. As such, it is imperative that your child learns how to write effectively. If your child is currently struggling, it may benefit you and your child to connect them with a private writing tutor. Failing to do so may have a negative impact on their future. The Varsity Tutors educational directors can find you and your child an expert writing tutor in Enterprise to help them pursue their potential in their class.

If your child is struggling with writing, a professional tutor in Enterprise, NV, could be the answer. Whether your child is having trouble with basic concepts such as spelling, grammar, or punctuation, or with more complex concepts such as using the active voice and descriptive writing, a private writing tutor could help. Writing is a process. Unlearning bad habits and learning to write well is also a process. Unfortunately, the process of helping a student improve their writing is not one that many teachers want to undertake. Improving a student's' writing skills is hard work. Working with a private writing tutor is a major advantage because they are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to try to improve your child's writing abilities.

Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Today, the student and I worked straight from a grammar textbook. We covered all different types of pronouns. This was not in conjunction with specific schoolwork. Instead, I am hoping to boost his knowledge of grammar so that he can be more successful in areas he is struggling with in school. When specific examples are laid out, he can recognize what he should be doing. I suggested he look over a few remaining practice examples and try to work them out before next week.

We spent the entire session discussing a writing assignment that the student has due later this month. The assignment involves analyzing and writing about a news article of her choosing. The subject of the article must concern environmental issues. She chose an article I provided to her last week. It involved the recent Supreme Court ruling on the President's climate change initiative. We read and discussed the article in some detail, and she began working on her first draft. She would write in stages, and I would then offer my review of her work. She finished two paragraphs. We will continue working on this in future sessions.

The student and I worked on a quick proofreading and grammar exercise. After that, we worked on a writing assignment I put together for him. The writing exercise was about cicadas and what life was like the last time they made their arrival (1996). What technology was around? What was the world like? He and I had fun thinking of things. He really enjoyed writing about this.

Today we worked on semantics primarily, as I was informed by the student's mother that he needed help in that area. We worked on word webs and maps to find connections between the meanings of very different words, and then proceeded to the study of common English idioms. The student did a great deal of reading over the past week and we were able to work on a good amount of summary writing and composition because of that.

After the student completed her homework, we briefly reviewed what we had covered in our previous session: working with the vowel letters A and I. We did this for about 10 minutes. Following that, we began to work on the vowel letters E and O. I had her work on some exercises that required her to sound out and write down words with these two vowels. She successfully recognized her mistakes as she read, once I showed her what she needed to identify first when she was unsure of a word. During the last 15 minutes, I had her read, so she could apply what she has learned in all of our sessions. She did a great job. I encouraged her mother to continue reading with her everyday. She agreed and has been doing so to help the student apply everything she has learned.

The student worked on his research paper today. He had completed and researched most of the work himself, then we created his works cited page along with editing his grammar. He has a very good and solid voice, but in some areas his vocabulary is not as academic as it should be. For example we had to change from "messing with the DNA" to "altering the DNA." He agrees that sounds more academic. He did really well and seemed very confident in his paper and it looked excellent to me.
