Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on factoring, completing the square, and finding the vertex by completing the square. I introduced the student to the Pomodoro technique, the talking to the duck problem solving technique, and integrals. He's struggling with recalling the algorithms to solve the problems. We will continue to work on this next session."
"We worked on graphing linear and nonlinear equations. The student has a good grasp of the difference in quadratics, exponentials, linear, and absolute value graphs. She needs more practice finding slope for nonlinear graphs. She needs to practice plotting points to focus on placing the X and Y coordinates in the appropriate quadrant and axis. She mixed up X and Y a few times, but was very open to correction. She does not specifically ask for help or indicate where her confusion is, aside from pointing to a section in the book. She was attentive and worked diligently. I believe she has a good grasp of the material and an understanding of when to use specific equations, but the letters (X,Y) and the order in which to use the equations seems to sometimes be confused. We will continue to work on this next session."
"We worked on graphing linear inequalities. We discussed graphing the linear equation and then determining what area to shade by plugging in a reference point (0,0). We also reviewed the slope equation and the slope and equations for horizontal and vertical lines. We finished a problem about matrix logic and went over an in-class activity about situations where equations have one solution, all solutions, and no solution. We also went over the methods for solving two linear equations, elimination and substitution, and practiced a few problems using both methods."
"We worked on graphing parabolas. The student was introduced to the behavior of parabolas as they shift up and down the y-axis and left and right on the x-axis. She also was shown what happens when the leading coefficient is multiplied by positive, negative, and fractional numbers."
"We worked on his homework regarding graphing inequalities. He is having some trouble with word problems. We will work on word problems next time I see him. Other than this, he is understand the concept and is able to do problems."
"We worked on how to solve a system of equations. The student's inconsistency with adding/subtracting negative numbers and knowing (confidently) how to solve for an unknown variable (i.e. - x) limited her progress with this concept. She demonstrates effort during every session. She would benefit from doing additional practice problems on the basic concepts: adding/subtracting negative numbers and solving for "x" in an equation. I will send problems to her so she can check her work on the remainder of the questions."
