Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student has shown great progress in his ability to take tests efficiently. During practice exercises he's been able to narrow down potential answers through elimination and context, making educated guesses and continuing work instead of dwelling on one particular question. In math we've worked on both test taking techniques, such as solving only enough of a problem to verify the correct answer before moving on, and critical thinking/intuitive mathematics. Student really enjoys card games and we've explored probability, fractions and ratios through various card games."
"The student and I finished studying for the SAT tomorrow. We reviewed all of the sections and practiced our strategies. She did an excellent job!"
"This time around, the student and I worked on all three subjects. First we reviewed some math problems he had done, correcting the few errors he had made. We went over how to solve for absolute value equations. Next we worked to revise an essay he had written, working on how best to employ a strong example and tie it back to the argument. We identified, in an effort to write more concisely, sentences that have some redundancy to them and can thus be eliminated. He is going to write another essay before our next session. Third, he completed a reading section. We determined that for a shorter section that mainly asks questions about the passages as a whole, it will make more sense to read the questions first, but for a longer section that mainly asks line-specific questions, it will be more useful to read the entire passage first (rather than answering questions as he goes), since the questions, though line-specific often require one to look at textual evidence from earlier and later in the passage."
