Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Jon in Somerville, MA
I gave the student several handouts: Joy Williams' The Mission; Philip Corbett's Tricky Little Things ; Hyphens and Commas; Megan Garber's What It Feels like to Be Bitten by a Black Widow Spider; Joyce Carol Oates is Lovely, Dark, Deep; and Lizzie Widdicombes' The Plagiarist's Tail. She did not have an essay or writing sample prepared. We used The Mission for a five-minute outline exercise. We had a discussion of writing commentary and how a strong vision is put together. We also discussed the first reading of chapter 1 of Jon Steinbeck's Cannery Row, and started developing notes to meet requirements of the AP essay prompt.

We worked exclusively out of the vocabulary workbook. There was a long list of mathematical vocabulary terms that we started to go over. We then also proof read his journals, which are getting more and more accurate!

The student and I worked on his summer reading project of writing diary entries for the book Ender's Game. He had already written 3 entries so as I was reading them he continued working on the 4th. We looked at his entries and compared them to the rubric he was given. He was starting to see ways to improve his entries and was already making those improvements as he wrote the 4th entry. Our next session is scheduled for September 17 @ 4:00 unless he needs assistance before then. If he needs assistance, he will contact me via email or phone. The student's mother and I discussed this and the arrangement suits her as well.

English Tutoring review by Katherine in Somerville, MA
I worked with the students today since they had an assignment due and had prepared the pre-writing and organization for our session. Both of them benefited from focusing on pre-writing and idea development. Even though both had struggled with having enough ideas before, we found that they had a lot more information to work with after the pre-writing. I went over the organization step more thoroughly with them. Then we wrote out the body paragraphs, including topic and concluding sentences and transitions. Nice work!

English Tutoring review by Thomas in Somerville, MA
On Wednesday, the student and I worked on discussing some of the themes of the Great Gatsby and did some admissions test essay practice. This was a pretty light work week for him, so there wasn't much school work that that he needed help with. I think he did find it helpful to discuss the Great Gatsby in more detail. We discussed some of the major themes, and I prepared him to pay attention to some recurring ideas within the text he continues reading. We spent the remainder of the hour practicing a writing prompt. He definitely has the formulaic structure down, although he did make some minor typographical errors. This stemmed from lack of proofreading after he completed the essay, but this can be remedied easily. With continued practice, I think he will be in good position to do well come test day.

The student is nearing completion of her essay work, which we reviewed. She has completed the majority of essays and is concerned chiefly with finalizing college applications.
