Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Joy in Pawtucket, RI
The student and I reviewed her writing work from last week and assignments from school. She is applying the concepts taught last week with great diligence, and continues to be very receptive to new concepts and strategies. She says that the outline formula that I taught her last week has made writing much easier for her, and her organization of thought in her essays definitely shows marked improvement from last week. She is very enthusiastic about writing now, whereas she was a bit hesitant when we first met. I have given her some suggestions to start fleshing out the details and ideas that she expresses in her essays to make them more substantial. We also spent about an hour going over new vocabulary words appropriate to her level, during which time she was asked to try to spell the word, define it, use it in a sentence, and draw a picture of it to assist with recall. She is good at using new words after she learns their meaning. She advised that she is currently covering prefixes and root words in class, so that will aid in her vocabulary building, and I will try to find some extra practice in this area for next week. Lastly, I read her composition of a Japanese syllabic image poem that employs similes, metaphors, and personification, which she is also covering in school currently. She created a beautiful piece about the seasons, with very rich imagery and a smooth and lyrical cadence. She continues to impress me with her excellent work. As homework, she volunteered to write another short essay on a topic from the prompts that I gave her. We will continue with vocabulary building and creating vivid descriptions next week.

English Tutoring review by Carro in Pawtucket, RI
The student was introduced to and practiced, with modeling, identifying the components of plot in a story. A "roller coaster" analogy, including the use of an illustration, was used to help teach the concept of plot. With guided practiced, he has started to grasp the concept of plot. We will continue our study of this skill along with word fluency practice in our next session.

English Tutoring review by Katie in Pawtucket, RI
Today the student and I began the session by reviewing a chart on effective annotations. After, he was asked to utilize the chart to annotate the short story, "Sea Urchin." After reading and annotating the story, he told me he was unsure about the purpose of the story. As a result, I opted to read the story together piece-by-piece as I led him through the annotation process. This helped him grasp the main idea. After, he completed a handout which asked him to use textual evidence to show how and why the main character changed from the beginning of the story to the end. For homework, he will be completing a journal entry on the short story.

The student and I read and reviewed the book, The Cay. He was asked to conceptualize and summarize the book throughout the session. He worked very hard to stay on task and accomplish our goals for the day. After finishing the book, we began to study his grammar words for an upcoming test.

English Tutoring review by Meghan in Pawtucket, RI
The student and I discussed previous strengths and areas of growth/ questions in the writing process. We talked about goals for the coming year and foreseen challenges of working with her teacher that holds very high expectations. We covered a writing tool of beginning sentences with subject and verbs to make meaning early, then let weaker elements branch off. She seemed happy to discuss the material, and I feel we both enjoyed our time. She has an upcoming personal essay which can be about any personal reflections. We brainstormed and recorded stories about her life that have taught her lessons. We were able to identify the main idea/ thesis of the essay as explaining and using experiences to reveal deeper parts of yourself. She said she was glad we identified a phrase to ground the elements of the essay as that is sometimes where she struggles.

English Tutoring review by Conrad in Pawtucket, RI
The student and I went through a strategy to take notes on a given reading and apply them to a specific, arguable (but not obvious) thesis. I gave him a 20-page article to practice writing theses and body paragraphs on.
