Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Bekah in Olathe, KS
We took a bit of a break in May and this was our first session back together. Based on the feedback that his mother received from his teachers at school, I am revising our vocab and phonics words to make sure we cover all of Round One and Round Two (many of the words we were already covering). Additionally, based upon this feedback, we are reading several books from the school. These books are a lower level and are meant to get him more comfortable with reading and to restore his confidence. We played a few games of Go Fish that I created based upon vocab and phonics words. He read two books and wrote a few sentences. His focus is pretty good. I am in the process of creating more games based upon his word lists.

We covered her basic reading books, along with some alphabet recognition exercises. There were no scores/grades to note progress. I left her with alphabet homework. I've no concerns.

English Tutoring review by Brandy in Olathe, KS
The student was able to read all 31 sight words that I identified she needed to practice on Monday. I assessed her on 300 sight word list. There were many words she did not know, so I will break those words into sets to practice. She read the passage from yesterday and improved her fluency rate by 7 words per minute. She also read a new passage twice today. The first time she read 47 words per minute, and the second time, she read 57 words per minute. For comprehension and further fluency practice, the student reread the story from yesterday. She was able to read it with ease with no mistakes. We read a new story today and worked on sequencing. The student was very good at verbally recalling the story and also ordering pictures about the story. In addition to the story we read, she read a short passage and answered comprehension questions that went with the passage. She was able to answer the questions, and go back and identify where the answers were in the passage.

English Tutoring review by Patricia in Olathe, KS
To start, the teacher and I discussed what the student could do over the summer. I had sent several emails with ideas for materials, activities, reviews and various reinforcement possibilities for reading, spelling, writing, and sequencing, as well as logic development. Then, the student and I worked through the rest of the exercises in spelling lesson 10. He did well. To finish, we completed the brochure project associated with the book series he's been working on. As usual, he was hardworking and lighthearted. He got a bit frustrated during one portion of the spelling exercises when he missed something, but recovered fairly quickly when I reassured him. This was our last session before summer break. We will resume Tuesday.

English Tutoring review by Rebecca in Olathe, KS
The first student and I finished writing our story on point of view from a shoe, and put her book together. We then discussed and talked about event sequence in a book/story. She took her favorite book and did a story board with one of the parts. She has definitely grown in her reading and comprehension over the last 9 months. The second student continued reading out of his book. We then did some discussions on characters and descriptions. We took his favorite book character and analyzed his characteristics then compared him to another character in the second story he had.

English Tutoring review by Kristen in Olathe, KS
The student and I worked hard to complete a comparative essay for her English class. She had to do all the prep work/research on her own, and then we used her notes and outline to create a 3 page paper. I was impressed with her idea for a theme and thought it turned out well. She is definitely becoming more confident and proactive in her writing.
