Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Mary in Newark, NJ
We did a lot of aural practice with consonant blends. We also talked more theoretically about reading and school in general. The student identified that she prefers more hands-on learning, and she identified the types of books she would like to read in future sessions: more nonfiction, science-related books.

English Tutoring review by Claire in Newark, NJ
At this session, the student summarized for me chapters 12 and 13 of The Hunger Games, which she had read since our last session. She recalled all of the major events, and we skimmed through the chapters together as I asked her a few questions about how the relationships between the characters develop as the games begin. She did not understand a reference to Peeta "showing his true colors," and asked if it was a metaphor. I introduced the concept of an idiom, a common phrase not meant to be taken literally. We then read through chapter 14 and some of 15 together, stopping on occasion for the student to summarize what she had read. Her comprehension of these chapters was high, as there was more action and suspense than character development. We will continue to move quickly through the book together at our upcoming sessions.

English Tutoring review by Victoria in Newark, NJ
The student is really improving in reading and writing! I saw that she received a certificate from school saying that she has graduated from morning school (reading extra help), and she now reads "I" level books with relative fluency and comprehension! I'm so proud of the strides that she's making. I continue to challenge her to see how much she can do, and she continues to impress me!

English Tutoring review by Michael in Newark, NJ
Read "Pete Looks Cool for School" aloud, focusing on connecting words that rhyme. Was able to get the student to really consolidate his penmanship between two lines, then completed letters 'Q'-'U' out of a workbook.

English Tutoring review by Janay in Newark, NJ
The student and I began the session by playing two rounds of a double vowel words card game. He did a good job sounding the words out based on their vowel patterns. He made the vowel sound then blended all the sounds together. Next, we completed his homework which was to write six sentences using his spelling words. It was difficult to categorize the spelling words this week. Instead, he simply wrote each word three times each. We ended the session by reviewing digraphs and blends.

English Tutoring review by Kourosh in Newark, NJ
Today we studied primarily grammar, especially direct vs indirect speech. He seemed to have a decent understanding on the concept. He seemed to have a positive attitude toward everything. In the last bit of the class, we read a bit together so I could get a better idea of his vocabulary and so that he could practice. I recommended that he read more for further practice.
